I've never had one before. Always wanted to try. Went to Thats Amore pizza in mandeville late one evening and they were packed and said the wait was forever and close to closing time, so we left. Now I hear they are closed/closing?

anywhere in the BR area have a good authentic type chicago style deep dish?

I always enjoyed making my own, but haven't done so in a while. It isn't hard, but can be time consuming depending on how involved you want to get. I usually made my own sauce and crust. I would sometimes make them in a 3.5" spring form pan. They were more of a pizza casserole, but they're damn good. You can use a cast iron pan in lieu of a deep dish pizza pan if you want and make one that is not as deep as the casseroles I used to make.

I'm glad you brought this up because now I'm thinking about making one to put on the smoker.

You can get them shipped from the famous Chicago ones

The Rotolos Craft and Crust on Burbank/Ben Hur close to LSU by the Arlington shopping center has a deep dish

As said you can order frozen pizzas from Lou Malnati's. Very worth it considering they're frozen.

Not as good as being in their restaurant, obviously, but it's pretty dang good.

You can find Gino's East in some grocery stores as well.

just ate a LM sausage pizza last night

my cousins in Chicago (Irving Woods / Schiller Woods area) sends me 6 pizzas every Christmas, and I return the favor by sending several king cakes during Mardi Gras time. Pizzas are very well packaged with thick Styrofoam and dry ice.

Albertson's, and they're OK, gives you a little taste.

Goldbelly ships a few of the others. We've had Malnati's shipped and it was pretty good. I prefer Pequod's (when in Chicago) so I don't know how it comes out frozen.

Figured this was inevitable once Fat Boy's opened right down the street.

Not that Fat Boy's is good pizza by any means, but families with young kids in that area will generally pick Fat Boy's over something like That's Amore.

Been years since I've had That's Amore Deep Dish from Metairie location, but I don't remember it being all that comparable to actual Chicago Deep Dish.

I had a blue cheese, jalapeño pizza at Gino’s East in Chicago one time and it changed my life. I was so full after only 1 1/2 slices. I took the rest back to the hotel and ate the rest of it during the night and for breakfast. I was so full I was sick and still couldn’t get enough.

That’s more of a thick pan pizza than deep dish. Very good, just not true to the style.

I like both Giordano’s and Lou Malnati’s for the accessible/chain places. Art of pizza is the best here locally.

Lou Mals is good but it's not the traditional deep dish, it has their butter crust. Good as well but if you want really traditional, Edwardo's (very few left even in Chicago) or Giordano's are the chains.

Also worth mentioning, as a former Chicagoan, we eat that once or twice a year, usually when folks are in from out of town and want to try "Chicago pizza".

Normally we eat what's called pub or tavern pizza. Very thin cracker-like crust, well-done, a bit of char perhaps where the cheese meets the crust. Vito & Nick's is the standard bearer down on 95th but they've slipped lately.

Yes its often cut in squares. No, nobody give a f***.

Was almost like a lasagna, good but just too much for me.

Was very good, but all in our family preferred Pequod's.

St Louis did it first.

My fav pie was Lou’s thin crust in downtown Naperville.
