Praise for Portillo's = lol.
This guy knows what he's talking about (though I don't need the sweet peppers):
quote:
Johnnie’s Beef in Elmwood Park was my most memorable meal in over a week of eating all over Chicago, from fine dining to ball park food.
Get you a beef, juicy, hot and sweet. That with fries, an Italian ice, and a diet coke was about $12 total. Cash only. Be prepared to sit outside at the picnic tables. Insanely good.

One I meant to list but forgot:
Owen & Engine: specifically on Tuesday. Their burger is tied with Au Cheval as my favorite, but the two are very different. It usually runs you $20, but on Tuesdays they have a special that includes the burger, a pint, and a shot of whisky for $18. It’s also across the street from a movie theater that does half price tickets on Tuesdays. Great option for a dinner and a movie weekday date night.

Friend,
I assume your stance is the equivalent to a local New Orleanian insulting Mother’s Poorboys because it is now a tourist favorite. I found native Chicagoans who treated Portillo’s with the same pompous attitude. To be fair, I tried a local’s suggestions including Al’s and Johnnie’s. The latter was better than the former, but Portillo’s was better than both.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

Former Shaya chef, Zach Engel, opened his Galit restaurant, which my second cousin who lives in Lake Forest tells me is the best Middle Eastern restaurant in the area. I tried a few places on Foster and Diversey, none of which were memorable. I have not tried Galit, but my second cousin has good taste, so I trust her.
Galit is incredible, one of the best meals I have had in Chicago.

Agree on Pequods pizza being the best deep dish.

While Chicago definitely has some great fine dining, the best times I've had in the city are just going and winging it. Trust Yelp.
For instance, Dove's Luncheonette was mentioned here. My brother and I were in the city for a weekend to catch some Sox games and wanted to grab a bite one day before getting on the train. Hopped on Yelp, found Dove's, and walked into a really small place, dated interior, lunch counters, and cool tunes playing. The food was absolutely incredible and was my most memorable meal during that trip (which included Gibsons and Frontera Grill).
frick fine dining, snobbiness, and $300 meals when you're in a city as rich with food and culture as Chicago. There's good food all over that city.

The best braciole I've ever had was at Mart Anthony (yes, with a 't')
Most everyone has already said anything I would, but I do want to copy what another guy said...the Mexican food here is really underrated. Almost any taqueria will be good

I used to live next to the Grand Blue Line station, so I would walk by Mart Anthony's every once in awhile (rarely). Never got a chance to try it, but great reviews.

Agreed. Went last year and loved it. Honestly, not sure why I haven't gone since...

The burger/beer/shot deals are plentiful around Chicago. They're pretty popular on Monday. My two favorite are DryHop and Pub Royale.
Owen & Engine is very good. Haven't been for awhile, but was a go-to after Maplewood.

Where is just outside? From down in NOLA, South Bend is just outside. From my old place in Lincoln Park, the far side of Evanston is technically just outside, although we all swore the border was a block north of Wrigley.

Chicago is as neighborhood-centric as it gets. There are so many awesome neighborhoods north of Wrigley, I can’t imagine why that would be a “border.”
I could be in Rogers Park and it still feels like Chicago — that’s what’s so great about the city.

Agree with Bavettes being the best steak; also as someone mentioned Gilt Bar next door is also a nice spot.
For lunch, got to Publican Quality meats

Technically the job is in Romeoville. I’ll likely live in the Naperville area since that will be 15 minutes to work and 30 to Chicago. I’ve heard the public transportation from Naperville to Chicago will be real easy so that’s another reason I’m looking there.

quote:Plenty of nice places around there as well. Naperville, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Lombard, etc all have nice little (and walkable) down town areas with plenty of outdoor seating, beer gardens, festivals, etc.

Also really nice public schools if you have children

Good choice for a suburb. Plenty to do without trekking into the city.

The Metra is easy, for sure. It's a little over an hour from Naperville, but I would recommend that over driving. Once you merge onto 290 from 88, traffic is a nightmare.

DryHop and Pub Royale.
Love me both of those, especially Pub Royale.
Great place and I actually love getting a dressed Hamm's from there.
Bangers & Lace just down the street has some good bar food and a great beer menu.
I also loved Black Bull, which, I saw changed to Mama Delia from the same ownership group. Excited to try that.
I love these threads because there are so many places in this city I want to try. Because of this thread I made reservations to go to Le Bouchon for the first time tonight. I'll circle back with a review.
We had a lot of plans to explore the city and travel this year derailed obviously. But I'm planning to take a week off in early October and the wife and I will have a staycation where we plan to do a different neighborhood each day and eat our way through the city as much as we possibly can.
