Catfish vs. Swai

Recently, I was leaving a seafood restaurant where I was parked near the rear of the building. There were several boxes marked "FISH" in large type. When I looked closer it said "Frozen Swai." I was more than a little concerned. I didn't eat fish this visit, but I have in the past. On a close inspection of their online menu, I noticed the fish po-boys, platters, and sandwiches are only described as, "fried fish."
Grrr. I never thought, living here, that I would ever need to ask what kind of fish filet was being served.

Piccadilly's country fried fish is Swai. They were legally forced to change the name after they switched from Catfish but kept calling it Catfish.
Swai is fine though.

Go grrrr elsewhere. Swai, Basa and Catfish are all tasty when fried right. In fact, if it’s frozen, I prefer Basa. Now the fresh out the water catfish from Tony’s is definitely a step up.

Swai and basa are the same. Swai has more antibiotic exposure and 1/10th the Omega 3 oils of catfish. They come from Vietnamese fish farms. Catfish comes from Mississippi. In Louisiana, I expect to be served local rice and seafood. Why import it? It's all around us.

Where there are basically no rules on water purity.

Not exactly.

It's cheap. Less food cost equate to more profit.
I think we would all be shocked at how many restaurants are serving swai/basa/tra/etc. It truly is all around us.

Every one that doesn’t specify what type of fish it is on the menu is serving it. If it just says fish or white fish I’m not eating it.

I try my best to avoid any place that isn’t serving local catfish.i hate that places like Acme are now run by bean counters. They market themselves as Nola or Cajun, but can’t serve a damn catfish raised within 3,000 miles of here.
The best is wild caught, but I know that is rare these days:

Restaurants need to disclose if they have imported seafood in la now. I would call the board of health. I’d also let everyone on Facebook know.

Swai is the shite and delicious.

If the menu doesn’t say catfish or some other type of fish, I ask. Not eating Swai.

I would prefer local catfish but I do know in all the blind taste tests, swai usually wins over catfish

Swai is bland, white, and inoffensive.
Pond raised catfish, to me, tastes like corn & can be fatty/soft.
Wild caught is a little "leaner", smaller pieces, more flavorful. Some might call the taste fishy....well, yes, it is FISH.

Swai tastes better than domestic catfish imo.
Friend of mine is a chef for a hospital and swai was the preferred option of a blind taste test.
Now it may be raised in some questionable conditions but taste wise it’s great plus it’s cheap.

I think there were a thread several years ago about some restaurants who were using swai, but calling the fish catfish on the menu. They were fined if I recall. I don't think they have to identify it as "swai" or "basa", but they cannot label it as "catfish".

They use that crap because the majority of the people want to eat fish that doesn’t taste like fish. Same stuff with tilapia.... doesn’t taste like anything. It’s also cheap as hell.
I personally don’t eat that crap. That may be worse than eating Chinese crawfish, which I don’t touch either.

I rarely eat fish in a restaurant with the exception of Spahrs. They buying local wild caught catfish.

I agree

It might taste better, but I wouldn’t eat swai/basa on sheer principle. There’s no need for it in Louisiana, just as there’s no need for foreign shrimp or crawfish. The only reason restaurants use it is because it’s cheaper.
