Glad you enjoyed your meal. Casamento's is always on our list of must haves while in NOLA. I don't understand why this thread turned out the way it did. Oh well.

I've never been told by anyone I'm in the "wrong neighborhood" in N.O., and I've had dealings in some sketchy fricking areas.
My son and I also walked to dinner tonight, but I didn't think we were making a statement.
I've made it a point to avoid second lines in the 15 or so years I've lived here.
I'm not sure what any of this cumulatively means.

Uptown over the years so I have a decent feel for the market over the last couple of decades. Wouldn't refer to most of it as "gentrification".
I didn't say "most of it." I was specifically referring to the area around Casamento's.

Oh, by the way, it's amazing how you can casually walk from your house down Magazine after dark . . . plenty of people out enjoying the weather . . . lots of places open . . . a lot of our neighbors out near our house with their kids . . . but, you know, N.O. is soooooooo dangerous.
This is my favorite part of your post. I live by the scooter place. I love the yoga place across the street. I've been shot 5 times.

Just know what I'm doing, like most people who live here.
Here's the sad fact. If you're middle class, don't mess with drugs or hang out in shitty neighborhoods or associate with criminals or dangerous people, you're chance of being a victim is not very significant.
Sorry, I'm not trying to start a heated argument but, that's bullshite! I was born in and lived in New Orleans in varied neighborhoods for 30 years. I've smoked marijuana on 2 occasions and neither were in N.O. I've done no other illicit drugs. But, I've been held up at gunpoint 3 times. Once during the 1980's in a quiet elderly filled neighborhood behind Brother Martin HS. Once on State St. one block off of St. Charles. And again in City Park leaving a Catholic league high school football game at Tad Gormley. None, none of those neighborhoods were considered "dangerous" at the time.
I've lived on the intersection of Nashville and Freret and once when I went out for a drink on a Tuesday night, someone watched me leave and minutes later broke in and violently confronted my roommate. I've experience 2 other break ins of residences that you would not consider as being in bad neighborhoods.
I know friends who have very similar histories during their time there.
I know you feel a sense of pride in your ability to walk about around your home and I'm impressed by the renaissance on Magazine, but that does not provide you the insulation that you seem to think it does. I take great pride in being as native a New Orleanian as anyone you've ever met, but I am not blind to the decades old problem and will not lambaste as fools those who criticize the city for all too obvious reasons.

Guy posts about oysters and this turns into a shitshow. You're not even good at trolling nola folks. Don't entertain these clowns VOR.

He brought this up with his last paragraph in his op.

Seems like you have some terrible luck.
I went to Brother Martin for 5 years and never had any trouble in the neighborhoods close to there or heard of any troubles with anyone else while attending school there. I also went to games at Tad Gormley during the same time span for every foot ball game and have been in city park tons of times with no incidents.
I'm not saying it can't happen but what happened to you is not the norm.
I have tons of family in the New Orleans area and none of them have been victims in any violent crimes. Same thing with my friends and their families.

My dog pissed on the roll down door at casamentos Tuesday morning. I don't know what it has to do with this but I just thought I should mention.

As a result of this thread, I am in fact waking up and going to Casamento's tomorrow by myself to celebrate my return home. Will post pics of the mugging as I get out of the car in FBD thread.

Grew up around Arts St. and Lombard. More than half of my childhood friends have similar stories. Several friends from my attendance at a local university have similar stories as well. The friend that I mentioned in an earlier post who bought the home on Magazine St. was hit in the head with a brick and robbed as he stepped out of that home at about 8am one morning. My wife was also held up in City Park while leaving a Jesuit football game at a time before I knew her. I hang with no drug abusers and I venture into no borderline neighborhoods, but I could go on.

Casamento's is great. Enjoy. Yet in the great tradition of TD you have extrapolated the events I posted to everyday occurrences for all who live there. I did not say that.

And I could go on with more than a 100 opposite stories than you. Yes it can happen, But New Orleans is no where near as bad as some people on this board make it out to be. I went to school for 11 total years(high school, college and grad school) in New Orleans and had no incidents. Now I go into the city every weekend and sometimes during the week and still no incidents.

People keep telling me it's dangerous here. I live in Uptown so I don't know wtf they're talking about. I guess I'll take their word for it.

Anybody who thinks the hood around casametos is dangerous has no frickin clue. I walk these streets every day. Too many white girls walking around with Louie purses and yoga pants for me to be a target.

The only person in my circle of friends who was robbed at gunpoint, was robbed at the Shell on the corner of Causeway and Vets, you can be robbed anywhere. The murders and violent crimes are usually in certain areas.

How many shootings happen in decent areas?
NOLA has its rough spots but just like Baton Rouge, you avoid the bad areas, don't deal with thugs, and you are okay.
The huge difference is in BR if you stay south of Florida blvd you're pretty safe. In NO the bad hood is a block away, esp uptown. Grew up in NO, I know where to go, where not to go, I've still been mugged twice, once on Canal st getting my car out of a parking lot, once on Prytania walking from a restaurant to my car a half block away.
A business associate visiting from St Louis was killed waiting for Algiers Ferry with his wife, someone told him it was safe, cousin was killed in an armed robbery a block off St Chas..
Don't feed me this bullshite that NO is like every other city, the statistics don't lie. I moved to BR 25 years ago, now Katrina pushed a lot of the garbage upriver and we're selling our house next year.
Is going to Casamento's worth some risk? Yes, I go in the daytime and park close. I go out to eat in NO at least 5-6 times a year, I pick the time and place carefully.

This makes you an expert on NO.

I am not denying that New Orleans can be a dangerous city, especially in certain areas. But wanted to point out that the two posters with multiple encounters with violent crime either moved away 25 years ago or were old enough to go to high school in the 80s. That being said I do know people that have been robbed and one of my friend's grandma was murdered in Lake Vista a while back (which was a pretty big story) but overall no crazy statistics since I have been around socially the last 12 or so years.

Going to hit Casamento's soon!
Grew up in the upper 9th WArd, now live in the same area of town. Have never had a problem. While I lived in a "safe" area of Lafayette, car was broken into numerous times, as was my house. Sure, N.O. has bad areas, as does every other urban area in the USA. I'd love for it to change, and I warn people to stay away from certain areas. N.O. isn't for everyone.
