I'm going to walk my dog down Mag by Casamento's right now. I was gonna start a pray thread on the OT, but I'll just ask you guys to pray I have a quick full recovery from the gun shot wounds.

Cue NOLA defenders who will label anyone who suggests the city can be dangerous as fear mongers who insist that everyone in the city gets shot on a monthly basis. Clearly, because the op could walk home from Casamento's the city can't be "soooooooo dangerous."

My first post was in agreement that walking home from Casamento's was not particularly dangerous but, that was not evidence that concerns about N.O. were overblown.

Don't feed me this bullshite that NO is like every other city, the statistics don't lie. I moved to BR 25 years ago, now Katrina pushed a lot of the garbage upriver and we're selling our house next year.

Is going to Casamento's worth some risk? Yes, I go in the daytime and park close. I go out to eat in NO at least 5-6 times a year, I pick the time and place carefully.

I really didn't mean to start this kind of discussion. I was really enjoying the evening and encouraging people to get out and enjoy it. Also catch Casamento's during the last week before vacation.

However, I have to say that crime in N.O. is far different than it was 25 years ago and less likely to affect most of us. When I moved here at the beginning of the 80's, it was common to hear about armed robberies/muggings all over the city, particularly Uptown. That is no longer the case. Those crimes have gone down and are far less frequent in many parts of town. Unfortunately, the murder rate is awful and affects, for the most part, people involved in criminal activity or innocent bystanders who happen to live in depressed neighborhoods.

andouille, honestly, there is little reason to fear walking to Casamento's or any place in that part of town. Look, my wife and I were victims of attempted carjacking back in the 90's shortly after we returned from L.A. The drivers side window was shot out as I veered away. This happened on Palmetto on the way back from Old Metairie. Random event. Things have gotten better even since then for these types of crimes. My point is that people in the city are more and more enjoying their neighborhoods, almost in the nature of a renaissance, and I hope it spreads to those parts of the city that have been having problems.

Well I almost made it all the way there. This is as far as I got, didn't want to leave the safety of the police station. As you can see they have a drug cartel king pin parked out front in the yellow Vette. If you look real close into the hey cafe window you can see the place is packed with gang bangers just waiting for me to cross the street. So far so good. I only have a bullet graze at this point.

It is the broad brush and yes "overblown" statements that cue those responses. I suppose I got into this conversation because a friend of mine who, like myself, has been here a long time, were remarking on how much better this city is than ten years ago. More exciting things happening, new small businesses started by entrepreneurs (especially in tech and design) and, generally, safety. The murder rate among significant segment of our population is awful, and it's all of our problem and responsibility in a sense. However, it does not place us in physical danger.

I wasn't responding to you, I was responding to the guy who implied it was risky to walk to Casamento's.

Everyone admits that parts of the city are dangerous, but no one in their right mind would classify that location as risky. Especially since there's a god damn police station right across the street.

Maybe so. Do you provide armed security.

Couple of years ago, my wife backed into and tapped the owner's yellow Corvette that he likes to park out front. I thought he was going to give me a beat down

Only for the extremely dangerous areas like Audubon Place.

Thanks for the prayers guys, I made it home alive. Just the bullet graze and a small caliber gunshot wound to my left forearm. Just like everybody else in the area I have a do it yourself gunshot repair kit and just treated this wound myself. If you do decide to visit casementos I suggest buying one of these DIY home gunshot kits.

Walgreen's is running a special on them this week. If you purchase the twin pack, you get a free panic button.

That as your 3rd paragraph of your op would have avoided this lengthy off topic discussion.

Agreed, except for the use of "overblown." Suggesting something is "risky" is not implying that death lurks around every corner. This is what I referred to as gentrification and Renaissance in an earlier post. Almost the entire length of Magazine has improved 75% over what it was when I moved out of the city in 2003. It's impressive to those of us who saw it during the 1970's-1990's.

I would think that was assumed. Nobody is in denial about what's going on among some communities.

20 people just got shot at a Mother's Day parade

This is very misleading and it sucks this was the headline in all the national media outlets. Makes it sound as if this second line was a big city wide parade like MG. The Mother's Day 2nd line was just a neighborhood event and that neighborhood happened to be in the hood. People at this event are either from the hood or they went there because they watched too many episodes of Treme.

In the 70's & early '80's you could go anywhere, we ate at Chez Helene's, Dookey's, every part of the city and every neighborhood. Then the drug and thug culture brought in by politicians giving 'entitlements' changed it all. People used to doing what we did got hurt. When my cousin was killed that was the straw, we had enough. The 'smart' friends who had moved uptown to Joseph St, Milan, Chestnut, start getting mugged and beaten in their driveways, they decided to gentrify old Metairie instead.

If you stay strictly on the beaten path you are safe in N.O. for the most part, if you park or wander or break down one block over, good luck.

I live to eat and I NO is the greatest food city in the US, but they have a long way to go before it is an open city as it once was. You can poke fun about 'I got away with only a graze', but the next time you are diving down Jackson Ave at night think about a flat tire or a broken timing belt.

It may be changing for the better, but safe is a long way off.

I think attitudes like this do not help things at all. The "cant happen to me mentality" ended up getting my dad mugged and robbed in City Park last year.
I dont understand the arrogance of many people in this thread. New Orleans has crime. Most of it is in undesirable neighborhoods, but to act like it doesnt happen in presumed to be safe spots is just ridiculous and makes you look ignorant. Not sure why so many of my fellow new orleanians have such a head in the sand mentality and can't take valid criticism.
