I dont understand the arrogance of many people in this thread.

It's not arrogance. It's a realistic understanding of the risks.

quote:

Most of it is in undesirable neighborhoods, but to act like it doesnt happen in presumed to be safe spots is just ridiculous and makes you look ignorant

No one denies that it can happen. But it is highly unlikely for the most part. That's all.

Not sure why so many of my fellow new orleanians have such a head in the sand mentality and can't take valid criticism.

Valid criticism is fine. But look at the content and scope of the critical comments by some. They ARE overly broad and an attempt to make the city seem far more dangerous than it is. That's what we're reacting to.

Oh, by the way, it's amazing how you can casually walk from your house down Magazine after dark . . . plenty of people out enjoying the weather . . . lots of places open . . . a lot of our neighbors out near our house with their kids . . . but, you know, N.O. is soooooooo dangerous.

A 36-year-old woman was listed in critical condition Monday night after being shot in the neck by a stranger as she walked to her vehicle in a residential block of Milan Street just off of Magazine, police and neighbors said.

New Orleans has crime

I'm not saying it doesn't, but outsiders looking in think everybody in NOLA hangs out at 2nd lines in the 7th ward. We all experience shooting on a regular basis and that's just ridiculous.

I've been robbed twice in my life, once in Kenner and a 2nd time in Houston. I've seen somebody get shot once and that was also in Houston on Richmond ave. Do I have my head in the sand ? No, I know what's up and I stay very aware of my surroundings in certain places. The corner of Mag and Napoleon is not a place I need my head on a swivel.

I agree, but ...

quote:

A 36-year-old woman was listed in critical condition Monday night after being shot in the neck by a stranger as she walked to her vehicle in a residential block of Milan Street just off of Magazine, police and neighbors said. The woman was shot once around 9:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Milan Street, said NOPD Officer Frank Robertson, a departmental spokesman. Neighbors said the woman had been visiting a home in the block, and was leaving when she was approached by the unknown person who shot her.
“It’s just a random thing that very rarely happens here,” the man said. “I don’t know if this guy was just roaming around or what.”

The shooting took place in view of a Magazine Street corner experiencing a dining revival, surrounded by at least five new restaurants.

This happened two streets over from that intersection (right by Magasin).

I NEVER see or hear of anyone getting raped in New Orleans pristine Garden District around Chestnut and Eighth.

You may want to actually investigate the geography (it matters a lot in NO in terms of blocks), timespans and apply them meaningfully if you're making a point. Sure there's crime. You chances of being involved in anything violent is a fraction of a percentage.

Showed you what? That it does and can happen anywhere? Yeah, that's the point. I live in New Orleans too. Face facts, crime is a little more rampant here (especially for a city its size) than other places. Looking down at you NOPD...

I agree. It was shocking and extremely unusual. So your point is if something may happen in an area every couple of years or so, then it's extremely dangerous.

The Milan and Magazine shooting and the Eighth and Chestnut raping/beating speaks for themselves.

Just like Baton Rouge, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Birmingham, etc.

If not for the murder rate among the drug dealers and gangbangers, that would not be the case statistically.

No one has argued that there isn't crime. But your odds of being involved in crime are low, as evidenced by all of the people in here expressing how they and no one they know have been involved in any crimes.

Did I ever say it was extremely dangerous? Please, show me where I said that. I just was stating is that it does happen and you cannot refute that.

Can anyone name one city which doesn't have its fair share of violent crime in the Western world?

Otherwise, can we just talk about oysters?

I was involved in the aftermath of both. Especially the Eighth and Chestnut event. Random assholes (very young) from other parts of town happen to pick the unfortunate woman. They were quickly caught. Doubtful that happens again.

Ehh...I think you can "get away" from the riff raff easier in those towns. New Orleans is so congested; packed in. We all know that a lot of the neighborhoods are "checker boarded" in good and bad areas. There always seems to be suspicious people "roaming" around in most areas.

Never said it doesn't. I'm talking about probabilities and how they affect your enjoyment of the city.
