I just read that... I’ve honestly never even seen their beer anywhere. Was it just around Lafayette?

You mean having a core line up of a hefe, wit and brown ale is not a recipie for success?
Sad I thought they were passionate about brewing, but unable to keep up with the changing taste and preferences of the craft beer community.

A bit disappointed but not really surprised, I enjoyed their Cajun Wit as well, sucks to see a place fail.

Makes me wonder if the people trying to open a brewery downtown are paying attention, they're begging for money via Kickstarter/GoFundMe/etc just to get the doors open. Hopefully they can put out a good enough product to survive, being closer to other bars downtown may help a little too.

No surprise. Their beer was awful.

Wouldn't go that far. The Wit was good especially with a Deanos Executioner.

Sadly enough, I have a feeling we're going to be seeing more of these much smaller breweries closing in the future unless their product is superior.

You never like to see someone's hard work fold, but I fear it's not even close to the end for closures.

From their website.
quote:

As a microbrewery, Cajun Brewing focuses on making a few types of beers in fairly small quantities for fresh and flavorful brews. Unlike other microbreweries that create craft beers that are often overpowering or have peculiar flavors, our beers are designed to be more approachable. Light, refreshing, never too heavy, and always great-tasting are the key descriptors defining our beers.

That's not going to work in this modern beer environment. Boring brews will get you shut down. Seems like to be successful you need a few rotating/special beers to keep people interested. You don't have to have hoppy juice bombs but if you don't you have to step up your stout or sour game.

I think that statement is only true if you're a new startup going the old-fashioned distribution model. If you open up in an industrial area and only make old school styles, then you have a long road ahead of you. You need storefront on main street with beers like that. The supermarket shelves are full of basic styles done better by other people.

They also went with the wrong distributor in the area then tried to get out of contract when they figured it out

The main lesson to be learned in all of this is... if you're trying to make money brewing beer, you have to sell what your consumers are buying.

You don't open up a 30bbl brewery, only distribute local, and your beers are a Wit and a Hefe. I doubt they went to the local liquor stores and heard "Man, Franzikaner is flying off the shelf! We can't keep Hefe's in stock! Hoegaarden - man if only there was another Wit in the game..."

The Cajun guys are good guys. They brewed really good beer, but they treated the business like a hobby and never wanted to face reality.

Wasn't really a fan of their beer. Sawbriar Brewery is opening up on Buchannon St. in Downtown Lafayette soon. Hopefully they can learn from Cajun Brewing's mistakes.
