Buying Beef in Bulk Question

Is it worth it to buy an entire cow to get slaughtered?
Or just go get a quarter from somewhere, and where could you get something like that?
I was wondering if there was any benefit to this price and product wise. Thanks in advance.

A whole cow is a lot of meat so you better have plenty of deep freezes. You can split one with someone. I’ve done that with grass fed out of Folsom but don’t remember the name st the moment. It was too much trouble for me to be honest as we just couldn’t eat it fast enough and if you aren’t careful it will freezer burn.
For myself it is more economical to buy in small quantities.

Anyone in BR want to split a calf?

I can understand that. My FIL was telling me. That they use to buy a quarter of a cow. That seemed a bit more reasonable to me, I just didn't know where I could do something like that while getting it butchered.

I dont think this is a good way to buy meat. I would rather buy based on grade. Whether Choice or Prime depending on what I am using it for.

Too much at once for my household.

I am working on a business opportunity that would allow this request to happen here locally in the greater NO area. I will let TD know when and if it does. Should know something soon.

First, I am not a huge fan of freezing beef. Second, for steaks, I like the freedom to pick grade and cut based on my fancy. Just my opinion, obviously.

Same here. Also if you don't have a generator you can lose a lot of meat with a power outage.

I do it, but not because it's convenient or easy. I quit eating CAFO beef years ago and I buy a 1/2 or 1/4 calf from a friend who raises Angus in SW LA. Her steers lead a cushy life & are slaughtered at a low-volume Mennonite abbatoir. So I'm buying a local, grass fed animal with no antibiotic residue and supporting 2 LA small businesses. I prefer the flavor of grass fed beef.
Go out to any rural LA parish and you'll find locally grazed cattle. Call a county agent in non-urban parishes & he/she will point you to local meat markets that kill/cut/wrap. You'll need to buy direct from a farmer, but plenty of markets will refer you to someone (or old-school, tell you whose ad flyers for calf shares are posted on the market's bulletin board, LOL).
For me, it's an anti-big-ag/CAFO choice.

I buy my ground meat in bulk one pound packages. I get a price break over 20 pounds. The one pound packages are great for just about anything using ground meat. I usually have them grind up the front shoulder of a grass feed cow. My city raised wife will not eat store bought ground beef anymore. She is still not hip on wild game and homemade bacon though.

My wife and I are going to be splitting a full calf/young cow from Smith Family Farms with the in-laws. It works out to around $4-$4.50/lb for full grass-fed, no antibiotics, no grain, etc.. cows. Pretty dang good deal if you can find someone that wants to go in on it with you.

Kent Farms
Amelia is one of the sharpest people I've ever been around. She knows what quality cows are and the industry in and out
The cows from them are exceptional quality.

This would be awesome. However, even if we could get some of the rural markets like Cutrer's or Fortenberry's to come down to the city once a week (kind of like how Cutrer's goes to the farmer's market in Baton Rouge), that would be great as well.

Nah...Just an indication of the level of knowledge.
The breed is a Brahman.
Guys who call them brahamers, brehemers, etc are using bad pronunciations they've been taught by other folks who don't know the real name.
I can excuse calling them that in conversation, but when you write it out on a website... yikes
