I know South Louisiana loves black eyed peas, but those purple hull peas with smoked ham hock and okra will change your life. A little fried okra on the side with a cut up tomato you can thank me later.

I do not understand why purple hull peas aren't sold in the grocery store. Hands down the best pea/bean to cook.
and OP you need to smash those black eyed peas a bit and make it creamier.

Love black eyes but give me purple hulls with some smoked pork any day. My mom always brings me some frozen from her garden every year. Original seeds come from my Great Grand Fathers freezer in Forked Island when he dies in 1992.

There has not been an edible pot of black eyed peas cooked in America since my grandmother died. Her black eyed peas mixed with crumbled homemade corn bread was unbelievable.
