It should be sides (and is in my family)… NOT a main course and meal in and of itself!

Ham, blacked eyed peas, cabbage, and grits here.
I usually do greens and ham hocks, but didn’t have time to slow cook them this year. Also, the wife was too busy to make cornbread, so I made grits instead to cover the gold. When I trimmed the ham, I took some fatty chunks and cooked them down in a cast iron skillet and added them to the cabbage and peas along with trinity.

Smoked a pork butt and had coleslaw with it, so cabbage is covered. Forgot the black eyed peas tho.

Cabbage is for the poor and the Irish. Greens for the win.

Ate some earlier. On the throne now. Hope that's not a bad sign.

What's the purpose of it? Never understood. Family never did it either.

My wife cooks it on New Year's Eve and we eat them then and on New Year's Day. Hoping to cover all the bases.

Fried hogjowl(sliced, and fried like bacon), blackeyed peas with more hogjowl, super grainy cornboard dripping in butter, fried taters with shredded cabbage. Delish!
EA: She shreds the cabbage, and adds it to the fried taters when the taters are done. So the cabbage is basically raw, and crunchy good. Yet it's warmed, and got all the hot grease for flavor. Same with corned beef in crockpot. Don't add the cabbage till the corned beef is done. Serve.

To all you baws diving into a big bowl of peas, hope you have a bottle of homemade pepper juice to dash on them.
I’ve got some I made in an old Maker’s handle.
