I've always liked Italian Barrell on Decatur.
Its not upscale but its very good.
I'm not a huge fan, but it's as "upscale" as any other place listed here.

Paladar 511, Osteria Lupo and Avo would be my choices for upscale Italian in the city.

This place sucks.
Another vote for Avo and Osteria Lupo here. Have not done San Lorenzo but would add this one too. Dinner there then to the hotel bar after would be a great anniversary night.

Avo used to be my go-to Italian spot but the food and especially the service was sub-par my last two trips. The last visit being about six months ago. Good to read some positive posts about it. Maybe it’s time to give them another shot?

Three pages of responses and not one mention of Venezia on Carrollton Ave. in Mid-City. It's been around for ages, so they must be doing something right.
My favorite entree is their "Eggplant Vatican".

You are absolutely correct Rizzuto’s sucks. Went there recently on a weeknight - red sauce was burnt, thin and cheap tasting. R&O’s has better sauce on its chicken Parmesan poboy. The beet salad I had was one of my worse dishes in recent memory. Had been prepared days in advance and refrigerated. The steens vinagrette was the consistency of slime.

This is as bad as claiming that because a place is always busy that it’s a great restaurant.

No restaurant is going to survive in N.O. if the food is not good. There's just too many choices to spend your money going out to eat.
Just out of curiosity, I checked their site and Venezia has been open since 1957, to that's 68 years of continuous operation. Places don't stay open that long serving bad food.

I don’t think Venezia is bad, but if the restaurant owns their building it’s def possible to stay open that long with mediocre food.

Venezia fell off big since they opened a 2nd location on the Westbank
Last time i was there service was terrible, food took forever and was cold. Then we were waiting outside for the uber, the GM was out there soliciting people to leave five star Google reviews. I checked to their Google rating and they had been getting hammered with bad reviews. It all checked out

I wouldn’t necessarily call it upscale, but I’ve always loved Venezia in Mid City. The food is always excellent, and the atmosphere? It’s one of those places where, if you went in the men’s room and reached behind the toilet, you’d find the .38 snub Clemenza taped there.

Patently false.
People line up around the block for shitholes like Mothers and ACME.

Nor am I at all, and its prices are outrageous imo for the quality and setting

Some weird considerations for fine dining in here. I would recommend Paladar 511

Fact is, New Orleans does not really have a "fine dining" Italian place at this point.
Paladar 511 is probably my favorite Italian in town at the moment as well, though.
