Hit the kanno place per recs on here... place is legit. Had blue fin tuna sashimi and some amberjack collar that night too. Pretty small joint though.

Daiwa in Marrero is awesome, I know the westbank sucks in all,but still a solid choice.

Ever since Kyoto closed I find myself going to Origami on Freret. I was a huge fan of Kyoto tuna tataki and found that Ninja and the other place on Oak street did not do it as well.

Horinoya. RIP.
My last meal there I had Aji sashimi. Good luck finding Spanish mackerel anywhere else. They take the whole fish and carve off the flesh in bite sized pieces, then either place back onto the fish or the meat is placed in front. The remaining head/bones/tail are artfully skewered to make it look like the fish is still alive and flipping. After the sashimi is eaten with ginger, scallions and soy sauce, the Chef will take the skeleton, deep fry it and give it back for you to enjoy.
I also had killer uni, mirugai (giant clam) and ankimo (monkfish liver).
I haven't been to every place in and around New Orleans, but if anyone knows where I can on any given day, walk in and sup on ankimo, mirugai, uni and aji sashimi, please post it here and let me know. I haven't been to Kanno, but it sounds like those here who miss Horinoya approve of Kanno, so I'll have to check it out.
Maemotte kansha shimasu.

The correct answer is Kanno. Elvis is the best sushi master in town.

They do aji the same way at Umami in BR. I've mentioned it here multiple times. One of the best things I've ever had. They also have live Uni and West Coast Uni which are top-notch, as is their ankimo. Last time I had the giant clam and it was still moving in my plate as it was served.

Appreciate all the suggestions. Have you guys ever heard anything positive about Hana? It's uptown near Cooter Brown's.
I went there once, lived in the neighborhood for years. It was ok, but there are much better options in the city

I miss Kyoto... Poke' thread yesterday really made it sink in for me.
I haven't found one sushi place that is head and shoulder above the others.
Kanno and Origami are probably my favorites
I eat at LV Pearl and Mikimoto the most because they are convenient for me. Mikimoto has been hitting the spot the past couple times I have gone.
My single favorite item from a sushi place is probably the "Tuna Sandwhich" from Little Tokyo.

Damn, you ate all of that? I can do a few slices on a sashimi dinner, but I'm not sure about that much mackerel.

quote:As well it should. I always tap my mirugai to see if it curls which tells me it's still alive. It irks me to pay top dollar for mirugai if it's dead. I'll have to check out Umami. Thanks for the info.

I'm just counting down the days until Koz gets his own place.

Kanno is the easy choice.
Most underrated would be Sake Don's in Elmwood.
