Anthony’s, and 2nd place is a long ways back there IMO. I’ve been going to this place for the past 25 plus years, back when they were a little hole in the wall over by Bob and Ronnies Live Music, and it’s as solid a lineup as it’s ever been. I literally haven’t had a bad sandwich yet.

The Muff is by far the best in town, and nobody’s even coming close, and the Deli Special / Italian Lover is off the chain, as are the rest of their sandwiches, and products they sell. I’m just a food groupie, but I think people who do awesome food should get props for the work they put into putting out a serious product, and they most certainly do. If Covid ever killed this business, I’d say it should be a rallying cry for revolution.

I've been eating at Anthony's for years too. I used to work near their original location on Florida and went fairly often.

I also like some of the Italian sandwiches at Pocorellos. I typically prefer to spend my money at a local place when I eat out.

Me too bro, and in light of how hard restaurants are being hit by all this Covid stuff, and it’s rough on all of them, I think it’s imperative for me to support those restaurants that are putting out good product, especially those owned by people that actually live here. We cannot afford to lose those businesses. They’re irreplaceable.

I was in Pocorello's last week getting a meatball poboy with cheese and Pokey and his wife were crazy busy. Made me feel good to see that.

That’s good to hear. My dad and Pokey are friends from back in school. I’m glad to hear he’s doing well. I always enjoyed their poboys especially. Another business BR cannot afford to lose.

Only thing with Pocorello's is how much longer to they do it before retiring
Someone will have to buy them out to keep it running and at that point you don't know what you are going to get quality wise

There's a little place on Jones Creek called Jasemine's on the Bayou that makes some pretty damn fine poboys too. They aren't the best but I've never had a bad meal there. Their roast beef and debris gravy poboy is very good.

I never feel welcome there. If they don’t know your name, they have no appreciation of your business.

Nostalgia makes me say AM Mart. It's solid but not the best, they need to step up their bread game.

Top to bottom, including poboys, chicken sandwiches, clubs, etc. Elsie's has been my favorite lately.

That's just the way they are, don't take it personally. Pokey is well known for being a little surly at times and if you're lucky enough you'll be in there when he and his wife have a disagreement. I love the place and hope it never changes.

Treat a customer as unwelcome and I will take it personal. Sorry, but the “that’s just the way they are” excuse doesn’t fly.

I'll tell Pokey that he needs to be more Chick-fil-A'ish so that you'll be able to enjoy his food.

The only run in I’ve had with them was with Pokey’s wife over payment. Like wrestling with a crocodile. other than that, I’ve had no real complaints to speak of. Pokey is just Pokey. He’s alright once you get to know him.

Truth is, I’ve been in both Anthony’s and Pocorellos when some heated exchanges occurred between the front and back of the house, with Anthony’s going straight into an argument in Italian, which was pretty cool I might say. There’s just something to the passion inherent in Italian eateries. It’s that way in many to most kitchens, but it seems Italians may take it up a notch perhaps. That’s just the way it is. Not right or wrong, just the way it is.

Inga’s is better than AM Mart. AM Mart is just cheaper.

I knew Anthony (RIP) very well. He'd occasionally come by my office and chat and tell me unfunny jokes. But he was so animated in the way he told the jokes, that they were awesome.

I never got to see the wrath that the DeAngelos guy was said to inflict on his employees. I might take issue with that, but Pokey & Vida are ok by me.

Been 10 years since I lived in Baton Rouge, but Ingas and Zeeland St Market were my top 2 choices.
