What is your favorite knife set for $250 or less? I would love something that is dishwasher safe.

are you referring to something like a 3 piece chef's knife set?

I would never put those in the dish washer.

I always wash my knives immediately after using them and back to their spot they go.

I have the Messermeister Oliva Elite 3pc and love them.

100%. it's not hard to wipe them down, dry them off, and put them back in the block.

I have several different kinds of the commercial grade white handled kitchen knives I bought from Sams/Costco (large and small chef/butchers, santoku, 2 or 3 different size utility/paring knives, bread knife) and I like them. They are affordable, they tend to hold a blade and sharpen easily. Spent some time working in commercial kitchens and grew to like these knives. They aren't fancy but they are dishwasher safe and nearly indestructible.

I'd say go to Walmart and get the cheapest knife set that looks good and get a decent 3-stage sharpener.

But for a decent budget knife set, Henckel or Calphalon. (Still get a sharpener).

Get Victorinox if you're going to wash them in the dishwasher.

Great value, and can handle the abuse

Another poster recommended these to me, it’s a great set. I don’t put mine in the dishwasher though. The S1 series is better but out of your price range

Add Dexter and Mercer all ubiquitous in commercial kitchen prep areas.

Someone mentioned a sharpener, if you can properly sharpen a knife then they are not much use to you.

I usually just recommend starting with a quality 8/10" chef's knife, a good pair of kitchen shears, and your choice of sharpening solution. I can do over 80% of my prep with those. Then add specialty knives as you want/need them. For most people, a large block full of knives means lots of wasted steel. However, if you are going to toss them in the dishwasher my choice would be Dexter or maybe Victorinox for the chef's knife, no need to spend big money and then abuse it.

My favorite knives are the cheap ones from the Asian markets that are thin. I also got a wet stone there and I can get them razor sharp. I have to sharpen before each use but they work really good.

I bought a Calphalon self-sharpening knife block and it's been one of the better kitchen buys of my life. I use every one of them except the tomato knife.

I got some cheap knife set from Walmart years ago. No worries when family does something stupid with them, I just sharpen them every so often and use the steel every time before I use the chefs knife.

Do you toss your cast iron into the dishwasher next to the knives?

I keed, I keed. But if you’re going to spend 250, I wouldn’t put them in dishwasher. Get something much cheaper.

and invest in some whetstones and learn to sharpen. i mean id recommend this anyway because its fun, relaxing, and keeps your knives razor sharp.

Kiwi’s. I have a couple, they don’t stay sharp long, but a quick hone gets them back cutting quick.

I advise against sets. You won’t use half of them. Get a chef knife, paring knife and a bread knife you’re comfortable with.

That can range in price from $6 a knife to $400 a knife. My most used are the cheap kiwis, a Dexter Russel, and a victorious. The fancy Japanese knife that was over $300 is awesome, but I don’t use it enough.

ETA- don’t put your knives in the dishwasher for many reasons. It’s not that difficult to hand wash a chef knife and paring knife when you use them.

No such thing, IMO.

You'd be better off to put that $250 towards a quality Chef's Knife, paring and utility knives.

For budget purposes, don't sleep on the Victorinox Fibrox line, but for just a bit more than the Fibrox you could get the entry level KAI Japanese equivalents. KAI owns the Shun brand, and they're outstanding.
