Went to Omi tonight and was completely disappointed. Place was a joke. Food was cold, service was not bad. Waitress was slow though.

Had the hot and sour soup (good), fried rice (cold and soggy), cumin chicken (cold and meh).

I'm going to give it another try next week. Maybe it was a bad night.

Nine Dragon Noodle House is better than Omi. Omi is not bad though... you just have to expect slow service and know what to order.

They serve different styles of food, so I don't really see the comparison. Omi is mostly Northern Chinese with a few Chinese styles mixed in and a sushi menu to appease the masses. 9 Dragon Noodle House has ramen, Korean dishes, and a mix of other random Asian foods. I like the place, but it didn't wow me like Omi.

If it has any merit to you, both my Chinese and Vietnamese friends greatly disliked 9 Dragon Noodle House. I haven't brought my Korean friend there, but he is adopted anyway so I don't know how much traditional Korean he is used to eating. I like it because they have some really interesting things, but I don't find that having weird things makes them "better" than Omi.

It's kinda like Dim Sum. Some people claim it's the best Chinese because it's Chinese food in a way we're not used to in BR.. but a lot of their items are ready-made and microwaved. I've gotten a few obviously microwaved dishes there.

Omi's fried rice is admittedly gummy and meh in taste, PF Chang's is weak too. No fried rice can come close to the twice fried rice of MK Wong's Chinese Inn circa 1977-1994.. Nor their huge egg rolls, which were made fresh daily, with scrambled egg, baby shrimp, twice fried glazed cubed pork, etc..and that fresh daily apple sauce and mustard mixed.

Next trip to Omi, I suggest Garlic Sauce Sauteed Eggplant, Kung Pao Shrimp, Cumin Pork, Chong Xing Chicken,etc..all excellent. Stay away from their mediocre sushi too..Yama, Ichiban, RnR, and Koto better.

In Nawlins, it's Thai and Viet scenes rate far ahead of Chinese fare today, and has an endless list of great places. Hell, I now prefer Gretna's Nine Roses(Vietnamese joint that has a great Chinese menu on their 300+ item menu), as they can out-Chinese 99% of Nawlins Chinese place's fare.

Also, Cafe East's pan-fusion fare, despite artsy-fartsy and pretentious knocks, I enjoy due to their excellent appetizers(try the Szechuan spicy peanut sauce dumplings!), aromatic fried rices, Peking duck,etc..

I've found Five Happiness to being very off ever since Katrina, not bad, but no longer excellent across the board, hit and miss dish to dish, even the hot and sour soup no longer great(such an basic easy staple). Heard their leadership has changed with time?

I'm not sure which part you're calling bullshite, but that's just my opinion. I think a lot of people see the dim sum style that we don't have commonly around here, and call it the best because it's different.

It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't think it's outstanding enough to be better than Omi either. I've certainly had noticeably pre-made microwaved items. Understandable since they don't exactly have hoards of people coming in to support their 100 item menu, but it's still meh when it happens.

Nope, the food is very similar. Many dishes are on both menus.

It doesn't. That's like saying you have tons of black friends that liked 12 years a slave. It's still a shitty movie and your ethnic friends have retarded taste buds.

No indeed. Dim sum is terrible outside of the same things you can get at any take out place, and it's just not believable when people claim to like it.

Pretty condescending. Let me guess, you once visited Los Angeles, so you are a certified expert in Chinese food?

LOL. Too ridiculous to even respond to. In no way was I being condescending by pointing out that we don't have dim sum anywhere else in BR. Interpret the internet how you wish, buddy.

tom, you're intended reply is obviously for LL. I didn't post any of that.

Haven't been to Dim Sum in many a moon, will be going back soon.

Chinese Combo King on chimes st never gets any love, but I challenge anyone to find a better combination fried rice in BR. It's legit.

I am definitely a CCK fan. The service is very good, too.

Depends upon the dish. Five Happiness has a broader menu, and they vary in some regional cuisines/dishes. All places have their high points.

I'd rate Omi's Garlic sauce and also their Kung Pao sauce as superior to FH's, though Omi's isn't exactly swimming in liquid. I'd rate Five Happiness smoked fish, pecan shrimp, sizzling scallops, moo shu deluxe etc..still as great fare.

But, I(and legions) assert that the place has slipped greatly from their former pinnacle.

Which items have you gotten that were microwaved at dim sum? I have never noticed that but generally order the same items.

Book choy in garlic sauce(I think) was definitely microwaved.

Some dish that's basically like a dumpling like app. I'd have to look at a menu to pick this one out.

Went to OMI today for lunch after reading all the positive reviews. Everything was made to order and hot. Service was great but no one really speaks even decent English. Ordered the Cumin Spicy Pork, Garlic Sauce Eggplant and the Chong Qing Spicy Chicken per the recs on this board. The eggplant was outstanding and the star of the three. The pork was delicious, hot and tender and also had a very nice texture. The chicken was not as good as I had wished and everyone agreed. I am defiantly going back and trying some other stuff. Thanks for the recommendation!
