So, on my most recent trip to New Orleans, I made stops at both Cafe du Monde and Morning Call. I'll tell you, Morning Call's coffee was much better, but their beignets really sucked. They have almost no flavor, and when not served fresh, they really lack. But it doesn't matter, Coffee Call is still the best. Also, has anyone here had the roast beef po'boy or any other lunch items at Coffee Call? Are they good?

Can't be beignets if it's not Cafe du Monde.

Agree .l When taking visitors to Cafe du Monde, I encourage them to wear dark shirts.... Powdered sugar looks great on Navy..

WTF? It's a simple fried dough covered with powdered sugar. As long as it's freshly fried in clean oil it will be good. I've never had them in a time frame close enough for comparison, but I've never been disappointed with either and this is the type of food that you could probably do a blind taste test and not have most people actually be able to tell the difference.

Does this question really need to be asked?

Has any one had the Beignets at Bourbon Street Café on Coursey? I thought I saw an advertisement some where that they do them on Sat & Sunday mornings, maybe I am mistaking though.

They must be served at surface of the sun temps and with coffee that resembles hot lava.

Seriously, I can't go home without hitting up Cafe du Monde and Central Grocery. I don't care how touristry it is or if I have to wait in line. I gotta have em.

DES amis is very good. I like the ones stuffed with boudin. Wow!

Morning call has the best straight up beignets but clearly there is only one place to get beignets when its all said and done and it has a beautiful view of Jackson square.

Exactly. I grew up in NO eating Cafe Du Monde and Morning Call beignets, Coffee Call is the same thing. Unless they are burned or underdone or the oil is old, identical.

the only time i ever thought Coffee Calls beignets sucked is when i screwed up and ordered the "fingers". You run a great chance of getting a plate full of those things that have been sitting under a heat lamp soaking in grease from the other beignets stacked on top of them. Since then i have always stuck to the good ol fashioned square beignets and have never been disappointed - they always come out fresh and hot.

FWIW - the mix in the box just doesnt come out the same and it makes a big arse mess in the kitchen; just leave it the pros!
