Comparable to the best ones that can be bought at a restaurant or deli?

No
Lovecchio’s Deli is on my way home from work and I think they have the best muffaleta I’ve ever had.
I usually order one right before I leave and it’s still warm by the time I get home

I’ve done it but the bread is hard to source in my neck of the woods and premium ingredients end up costing you more than just buying one that tastes damn good.

Make them at home. Bread is always the issue.

However, I like hot muffs and more olive oil than most places use. So it kind of works for me. Not a typical order when I eat out.

Several times a year. Rouses sells the Muff buns in a 2 pack and I hit the deli for ham, Genoa salami, mortadella and provolone cheese, then slide over to their aisle that has pickles and get the olive salad.

I put them together at home and toss them in the oven until the bread is lightly toasted and the cheese starts to melt a bit and tear it up.

If I make them at home I use French bread. I like it anyway and don’t have to find muffuletta that always seems stale to me.

Yes, I make my own bread too. I'm in Dallas so can't get good muff bread anywhere. I used to make my own olive mix too but Central Market sells a pretty good muff olive mix in their olive bar.

Liuzza's on Bienville makes a "Frenchaletta" which is a muff on French bread and they are very good. Not a bad alternative if you can't find the real buns.

I made them once, using focaccia bread. They were good.

My grocery makes a good focaccia, and I’ve used it for muffs several times. Very good.

Meats, cheeses, and bread from Zuppardo's. At home has more meat, cheese, and salad. So yes, very comparable if not better.

I’ve been using Ciabatta Bread from Rouses to make single serving ones. Works really well. My Dad made them on weekends at my grandparents house all the time. Every time I take a bite it takes me back to my childhood.

I’ve also finally come to the opinion that they are better at room temp than baked. Took a long time to get there, but it’s true.

I've made them at home, but it's really cheaper to buy them already made.

I even tried to make a bunch of mini muffulettas with the little rolls that Rouse's sells. Don't do that. Pay them the buck a piece and be happy about it. Making the mini muffs is a TON of work.

Yep, I don't make small food. Too much of a PITA to deal with for little reward.

Sounds great! Have you ever left off the olive mix until the muffuletta comes out of the oven? I love cold olive mix on a hot muffuletta.

My dad makes a "muffaletta" dip of sorts. He pulses the central grocery mix and layers it with a mix of whipped butter and cream cheese. Great on crackers.

Considering a muffuletta is named after the round sesame seeded Sicilian loaf inside which it resides you are not making a muffuletta if you make a sandwich with any other bread.

More non-New Orleans posters trying to corrupt New Orleans culture with their ignorance. I don’t go to Baton Rouge and pretend to be an expert in your city’s chain restaurant culture. Why do such posters like martini and Gris Gris do this with New Orleans?
