All I know is that I'm in no way surprised. Not a perfect guy, but for a 'yat like Al to make it deserves some recognition. A gaudy statue in Jefferson Parish seems appropriate.

It's a perfect representation of him and it fits the New Orleans area to have the king of fried chicken remembered in something like that. I bet they decorate the hell out of it at Christmas.
He contributed a lot, but all that fame went to his head as far as his personality. It would have been nice for him to have been successful and decent at the same time. You can still have a big personality and be a good person. His antics in later life sort of nixes the poor boy story in how he's remembered. Kudos to him for his successes, though.

At his core, he was a good person. He wasn't evil or anything.
New Orleans has produced far, far worse.

Seems perfectly Metairie, IMO.

That's not the point. Which ones have huge monuments?

The public didn't get to see the core person, unfortunately.
He was a very successful man.

The one story that stood out to me is that he put a gun to one of his employees heads in a meeting when the person made a joke about the alligator shoes he was wearing. Multiple people in the meeting have verified this was true.
Anybody got any other crazy stories? He was definitely a character.

If that's true...it should be in a Tarantino flick.
ETA: now that I think about it...Tarantino could do a very interesting bio on Al Copeland. Copeland, New Orleans in the 70's...

In a nutshell:
"Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance and a deep need for admiration. Those with narcissistic personality disorder believe that they're superior to others and have little regard for other people's feelings."

I was making fun of it at work and the lady in the next office got a little offended and said it looked really nice. She's from Kenna brah.

Is the family offering anything else, I saw them mention a possible concert area in the park.
That would be neat to see Lafreniere host small festivals. Kenner has fests all the time at the lake and river, I can't think of anything in Metairie other than Pet fest.
One statue isn't that big of a deal. There are statues of business people and philanthropists all over the area.
(Malcolm Woldenberg ?)
Not comparing Al to him, but it isn't a bad thing. In Al's day Lafreniere park was just an abandoned horse track. Benefactors like him helped Jefferson build a nice metro park. (would be nicer if they would better aerate their lagoons)
I see no issue with the statue, and think he should be remembered in Metairie history.

They already do that. Forget what they call them, but they are free concerts like the ones at the square. Amanda Shaw type performers.

He didn't open his home to thousand at Christmas, that would imply that he let people in his house. He put up lights and people drove by it and created a nightmare for his neighbors

This just in: Al Copeland statue, stage agreement approved by Jefferson Parish Council. [Unbelievable]
"Plans for an Al Copeland statue and performance stage in Lafreniere Park advanced Wednesday when the Jefferson Parish Council agreed to allow both memorials to the late fried-chicken king. There was no discussion or dissent."

My buddy was trying to convince me that he had tubes surgically implanted, in his arms, so he always looked jacked.
