I made the regular version (non-aged). Tripled the batch for an early Christmas dinner next weekend. Used Buffalo Trace and the rest of my bottle of El Dorado 12 year.

Make the non aged version. It’s really good.

Is there a version that’s non-alcoholic? My brother is on year 17 of sobriety but I’d like to try and make my own nog.

Where are you all finding whole nutmeg to use for this?
Or are we all just using pre-ground nutmeg here?

You can get if from the local grocery.

Started drinking mine. It made it 8 weeks ago and it’s damn good. Mellows out a bit once it’s been opened for a couple days. Used Buffalo Trace in one batch and regular 4 roses in the other. Plus the rum and cognac. Can’t remember the names off hand, but I picked up those bottles at Hokus in Pville.

I’m saving my last 2 for a run to a hunt in Arky after the New Year.

I found it at a Fresh Market last year.

The spice brand Badia sells little bags with whole nutmeg. You can find them at most grocers (sometimes in the international aisle) instead of the spice aisle. Or try a Latin Grocer.

Bump.

About halfway to Christmas so I decided to try my 6-month egg-nog. Went a bit heavy on the booze, but it goes down smooth, thankfully.
(Also, no stomach problems followed, which was nice )

I still have a quart that I put up last October. Might have to give it a try.

I'm looking to make this recipe this year. Would a jar like this be good for one batch? Do I need to disinfect the jar or anything else before making it?

It would be fine, but I'm going to recommend making it in something that'll be easier to pour out at the end. One of the alcohol bottles that you'll be using should work.

Just clean it with some water. No need to disinfect.

Anyone have feedback on using swerve, stevia or other sugar substitute instead of sugar?

I do not have any experience with alternative sweeteners. There is a delicate balance when aging this stuff. Sugar is part of the preservation in addition to the alcohol. If you do this, I would absolutely recommend aging under refrigeration. To be absolutely safe though, my real recommendation is use Alton Brown’s unaged version with your alternative sweetener. This version is miles beyond anything that you can buy and will be the best nog you have ever had. That way you can have the best of both worlds safely.

Thank you for the information. Is the sugar consumed to any degree during the process? Just trying to see what the carb hit may be.

The sugars aren’t consumed in any appreciable amount and the carb load is stiff. Healthfood this aint. Try the unaged version first with alternative s I’m weetener. You may need go no further. You can even sub the three spirit base of the aged version for the single spirit of the unaged one with great results kand absolute safety.
