Cool video... I'd love to try their BBQ. I know the dude Johnny doesn't like Aaron Franklin for some reason. I've seen him alude to it on instragram a few times

Franklin was trained by Louie Mueller's in Taylor, Texas then left there and opened up his own place in Austin. Supposedly bad blood over the split/success.

I think you under estimate a Texas Boi’s desire for BBQ. I seen it at Snow’s

I don't think Franklin has been #1 over the last two TX Monthly (Daniel Vaughan) cycles. Snow's was the defending #1 before Goldees.

FTR, I think TX Monthly wrongly weighted what BBQ joints were doing with smoked meats than the smoked meats themselves (important distinction).

Have never eaten at Goldees. Have eaten at #2 Interstellar in Austin. It was great. But TBH, I thought LA BBQ, Terry Blacks, Corkscrew, Killen's, and Roegels (Voss) has better brisket and pork ribs.

I enjoy TX BBQ. Hope to make it to Goldees sometime. The video was really cool.

I am not sure how anyone can beat Truth’s brisket or beef burnt ends

this years list seems to give particular merit to side dishes and creativity instead of the tried and true meats. Havent made it to Goldees yet, but live about 30 mins from the Truth in Brenham. Its a great place and will actually take an order ahead of time with a minimum amount. Nothing better than skipping the line.

Added to my list, first time I've heard about it and I've driven through Brenham a couple times.

Once a pitmaster achieves a certain point of skill, it gets very hard for me to discern much difference. I've had Franklin w/o standing in line and don't ever see the need to do so. Plenty of other places of the same caliber...for me. Will keep trying new ones though.

He's definitely an egg of a different sort. But like you say, he does it his way. He's against the grain or conventional thinking on alot of his stuff. For example: he loads the pit with meat THEN lights the fire (something something bad smoke vs good smoke), he uses Match Lite to start his fires...and lighter fluid. Lol. But it apparently works. Can't wait to eat there one day.

Regarding the match light cause it’s always a hot button topic, yes I’ve actually witnessed them start the pits at the restaurant with it lol.

Mueller went under and Franklin bought one of his pits. I think they will go to the grave as mortal enemies.

Awesome video. Thanks for sharing!

I love how a bunch of young people took the time to learn, got together to run their place, and are at the top of the game.

You are thinking of the nephew (or son?) who had J. Mueller bbq for a few years. He went under because of personal issues. It's a shame, because his brisket was very good, as was everything else.

Louie Mueller's in Taylor is still going strong.
