Don't know if this is because of possible flooding at Morgan City or not, but my son's girlfriend, who is in the Coast Guard stationed in Panama City has told my son that they were ordered to proceed by sea to Morgan City on a cutter. Maybe CG is deploying resources in that area for possible search/ rescue?
Morgan City has already started lining the outside of the city with huge sandbags.....they are probably sending more manpower to get these sandbags in place.

Does the forebay flood more when the open they increase ORCS?
I wouldn't think so, but don't know. I assumed it would flood naturally, like the Bonnet Carre forebay. I was very surprised to see that it was dry.

I did. It wasn't disclosed. Nor was it in any article that I searched on the intwerwebz. My best understanding is that it hasn't been opened since '73.

What am I looking at here? What's the structure on the bottom of the picture?
That's the Morganza Spillway. The MS River is in the background, forebay in the center and the floodway side in the bottom right foreground.
The photo was taken by Ted Jackson of the T-P on May 4th. more photos in the link below.

From that article in the comments section

What are the chances the river could jump its channel and use the Bonnet Carre Spillway as its main course to the sea? Has the corps ever considered that as a possibility?

Only 42 of the 126 gates were opened on the Morganza in 1973. USACE are saying at least 100 of the 126 will probably be utilized for this flood.

I was wondering how much they were gonna open it up. I didn't think they were gonna need to open it that much.

From the article.
How would opening the old river control structure flood the morganza spillway?
quote:
As of Thursday afternoon, there was no decision on opening Old River Control Structure gates that could flood the Morganza Spillway and send more water into the Atchafalaya River. But Corps officials are considering it and could make a decision within the next day or two.

Good Lord... I didn't read the comments on this article, but it doesn't surprise me. Some of the same characters are repeat offenders on nola.com. Stupidity, racism and illogical conspiracy theories are constants. They make OTers and Rantards look like Rhodes Scholars.
Now I'm gonna have to look!

That graph makes me uncomfortable, knowing that Red River landing at 65.5' is supposed to be at 1,900,000 cfs of a capacity of 2,100,000 cfs. Thats 90.5% capacity. This is very much going to put the system to test.

Ship traffic will be halted once the river gets at a certain stage. This is not good for the plants on the river. Gas prices could go up big time.

Dad, what water level stage will they close the river? They said once the river crests on the 23rd it will be slow to recede. Do you foresee the river being closed for 2-3 weeks?
Posted on 5/6/11 at 12:15 pm to LSUDad
I just got word that honeywell hired an engineering firm to do a flood study. They said if the river crests as expected then the chemical plants on the west side of the bank are fricked.

I heard there is talk of closing off bayou chene too. They have not started yet though. Do you know if they will do it at the icw or atchafalaya intersection? I can't even imagine how they are going to do this. It's not shallow or especially narrow, but I guess with enough 400x100 deck barges they can try.
