There is no "set stage" to close the river. It is based on certain variables such as navigation and levee integrity. If things go accordingly and river traffic doesn't cause serious disruption i.e large wakes, then I doubt they close the river. The last thing they want to do is stop commerce on the river. The only reason they stopped the river up in Caruthersville was mostly political. The wakes caused by traffic had the land owners in an uproar.

I am assuming now that Morganza was opened in '73 to relieve the pressure on the failing ORCS not due to a flood trigger. Now that flooding is causing the trigger to open the gates in Morganza this is new territory for the USCE.

Behind the seawall in Morgan City. The water is getting closer to the base of the seawall. The base of the water is around 6.5 to 7 ft.

At the Plaquemine ferry. By far the highest I've seen it. The ferry is also having to shut down every day for maintenance due to the rising water

I'm going from Jena to Natchez later. I'll try and get some pics if I see anything significant.

I was confused as well. There must be a problem with the ramp, ferries are usually pretty imune to water depth increases.

The current gets out of control and the docks become a big problem. The water is getting to the point that the ferries will be shutting down soon. They're only immune up to a certain point

I guess perhaps the incresed currents could be creating some maintenance issues. It was just funny the way he worded that.

Its the speed of the current that they are afraid of

Thanks for posting that.
What I have said from page 2
Until water tops the potato leeve ( off to the left in the photo) and the forebay is flooded, opening the Morganza structure does nothing.
If my memory is correct the Potato leeve is @ 49'.
Once water tops the Potato leeve it has about 3,000 acres to flood (all the land to the left).
Once that happens all the land to the left will be flooded to a depth of about 10'-12'.
When and if the gates are opened water will flow to the right thru the Morganza spillway on to the Atchfalaya spillway.
Now if you have never felt an earthquake in your life. Be near here when they open these gates.
And if you have never picked crawfish before, be here once the water receeds.

I was just talking about the ferry itself. The dock is another matter.

Do you know if they will do it at the icw or atchafalaya intersection?
I would assume at the ICW...but depending on how deep it is right there, sinking a barge may not do any good if the water is 10' deep and the barge is only 18' deep, all the water has to do is come up 8' and the barge is useless.

Yeah I meant the docks go under maintenance not the ferry. Figured the OT geniuses could figure it out anyway.

i think it is the ferry brah but it doesn't have anything to do with the high water. at least that's what i think i heard... they are moving the ferry from up near angola to plaquemine this weekend i beleive as they said the ferry there has been having mechanical issues.

Just got a message from a WLF [biologist] saying it will start opening immediately. People that have moveable camps in that floodway need to go asap. Most people thought they would have another week to prepare and at this poing its not looking like it.
This is the text he received from his superior, take it for what its worth:
"All,
Just received word that the Morganza floodway will be opened immediately. All PLBs are to be standing by and ready to respond if needed. Those of you with immobilization equipment – make sure your kits are supplied and ready to go."

Sandbags at Berwick gas station. Don't know how or where they plan on putting them out around the outskirts of Morgan City. They've already stacked normal size sandbags behind the floodgate in downtown Morgan City on the river side about 4 feet high since the gates tend to leak. People are definitely getting nervous down here. Lots of debris coming down the river already. Gonna be an interesting couple of weeks.[/img]
