Unless the situation has changed dramatically in the last 48 hours, they can open the Morganza and nothing will happen. Look at the pic a few posts above. It was dry on Wednesday and apparently, the river needs to top the Potato Levee to flood the forebay.

New kid on the block here. Best source of flood info I can find anywhere on the interwebz! Anyway, neighbor was up at Morganza checking on crawfish traps yesterday afternoon. Reported back that water was starting to flow over the tater levee pretty good. Now that the river has come up another ft or so over the past 24hr, I would imagine there is a pretty good torrent of water poring over. Still will take a few days to fill the forebay.

USACE's NOLA Colonel Ed Fleming has made the official request to USACE's Walsh to open the Morganza spillway. Walsh will make final decision tomorrow late morning.

All but certain that Amelia, Gibson, Morgan City, Berwick, Bayou Vista, Patterson, Pierre Part, parts of Houma are going to get hit hard.

MrLSU, your info is very much appreciated, but do you have any links?

That was my first inclination as well, and the only reason I brought it up here was because when someone on the OB mentioned that, someone said that the water should start should make its way in today and that it would only take a day to be full. Not sure how accurate that is, as no source was provided.

ETA: Just read Mr.LSU's post so I guess that poster's source was not reliable

TheWiz, been in SELA for 21 yrs now. Both kids born/raised here and swear they will never leave. Doubt if I will either, though a retirement home in the mtn's of western NC is a dream of mine. My son and I belong to Ole Miss hunting club which is a 10,000 acre patch of woods on the opposite side of the forebay from the Morganza spillway. I have been teasing my son about the fact that all the water that will be going thru the spillway has to flow down our shooting lanes and across out deer stands first!

I'm no hydraulic engineer, but for the forebay to fill up 12', wouldn't the river have to rise 12 feet

ETA: MrLSU, What's your source on all this?

Yeah, doesn't sound very likely.

I don't think it'll happen, as in it will not fill up to the top of the locks. I do think it will be opened though. It doesn't have to be full to the top to divert some flow.

Downshift, the 'potato level' is something like 10-12' tall and has kept the forebay dry up to this point. Its purpose is to protect the forebay against minor floods (up to ~37'on BR gage)so that crops will not be destoyed during minor events. The river is already 10'+ higher than the forebay at this time so filling will be rather quick.

Is there is 12 foot elevation difference between the top of the potato levee and the edge of the forebay by the structure? If that is the case, then you are correct.

However, if the potato levee is 12 feet high, with no change in elevation between the base and the structure, then once the water starts coming over the top, it will seek its own level. It would take time, but it would fill up (see some of the tsunami footage when it starts coming over the seawalls [at some point, the water "levels" out]).

Maybe

No buddy, I wasn't taking a stab at you. The OT can, at times, be very unfriendly to new folks. Welcome

Wiz, didn't take it as a jab. It's all good. Expected some ribbing with that silly screen name. This place is mild compared to some of my hangouts!
