if the river is getting within potentially a foot of the top of the leveee, is the Port of NO going to get swamped since its behind the floodwall?

I think the river levees and floodwalls in N.O. are 25' and protect to 20'. I'm not sure what the discrepancy between the two figures is all about. With the Bonnet Carre open, the should still be a considerable amount of freeboard on the levees. Don't know about the port facilites, Harbor Police, etc.

Bohemia Spillway is located on the east bank of the Mississippi River south of Pointe A La Hache (50 miles or so from Chalmette). The Bohemia Spillway levees are already projected to be overtopped by a couple of fee and I believe the when they blew up this levee in 1927 it lowered the flood stage at New Orleans by 2 or 3 feet which would be the point of blowing it up.
Future rainfall is the million dollar question.

One last point that everyone needs to keep an eye on is the the LaBranche Wetlands in St. Charles Parish. It is now a forgone conclusion that the USACE will design a spillway, siphon, or diversion canal in this area in the very near future BUT keep an eye on LaBranche because the USACE is very busy modeling the off chance that this would need to be used for this flood event.

Link MrLSU, otherwise state your sources because you do NOT have credible information.

So how much risk is Berwick in if Morganza Spillway is opened?

Check out this link for all river gauges. N.O. is 20'

I thought I read something in the T-P about a few days back, where the Lake Ponchartrain Foundation was asking that spillway water be diverted in to the LaBranche Wetlands.

Map of LaBranche location in link.

John Barry on Bohemia Spillway & USACE officials on LaBranche Wetlands. I stand by my "non-credible" information thank you.

That was what I was asking for...a source, and you gave it, thank you.

OK, I checked your link showing the river stage at various gages. Where was any info on levee height? I must be overlooking it.

The USACE MR&T project flood design elevation is 20' in N.O. Project flood design discharge is 1,250,00 cfs at the Carrollton Gage.

I'm sure that there are some levee reaches that have subsided more than others in the N.O. area, but even at 19.5' the water will not be less than a foot from the levee crown. Expect to see 5+ feet of freeboard.

I've been following this thread pretty closely, but haven't seen this posted. Is Morganza operational?

So if they do that, does Motiva get swamped or not?

No, I'm just curious as to how they could flood that area and not affect that plant.

but if if does it will be because of the backwater, not just what comes down the River.

This is true. Morgan City's seawall is about 21 feet but the backwater is our kryponite.

READ THE POSTS!!!

Sorry couldn't resist... The forebay of Morganza was still dry on the 4th. Maybe there's some type of structure in front of it that floods it? Pic below:

Who took this pic and when was it taken??

Does the forebay flood more when they increase ORCS?

Don't know if this is because of possible flooding at Morgan City or not, but my son's girlfriend, who is in the Coast Guard stationed in Panama City has told my son that they were ordered to proceed by sea to Morgan City on a cutter. Maybe CG is deploying resources in that area for possible search/ rescue?

What am I looking at here? What's the structure on the bottom of the picture?
