Sounds like a multi year problem for Avoylles Parish
what has us worried in avoyelles is the same thing that happened in'73. the water at three rivers was so high that the red river couldn't drain into the atchafalaya like usual causing flooding in northern avoyelles. the waters reached to top of the fuse plug levee for the west atchafalaya floodway. this floodway has never been used before. and we are concerned if the levees will hold. in '27 there was 6 feet of water i live and im 4 miles away from the atchafalaya. and the prediction 5 feet higher than '27 at old river. but i know that we have higher levees and the control structure that we didn't have in '27 that will make the river levels higher

I thought all indications were that BR would be ok with the Morganza Spillway possibly being opened. I must have missed something on the last few pages.

Yeah, I know he has to answer to the law. I can't help myself from taking jabs at the USACE.

Check the OB thread as well. I just bumped it. Opening Morganza is generally viewed as a bad idea.

All this talk reminds of this article written after Katrina. Author says to not rebuild NOLA because the Mississippi is abandoning NOLA for Morgan City and the USACE screwed up with all the dikes, levees, locks, and spillways and is sinking NOLA.
Pretty good read if you ignore the attack off the gas and oil industry.

The levees were supposed to hold for Katrina. The levees around BR haven't been worked on in a long time. The spillways will probably work, but does anyone really want to trust the Corps after Katrina?

BATON ROUGE - Governor Bobby Jindal said today he doesn't expect the Morganza Spillway will need to be opened to help relieve the rising Mississippi River.
Jindal made the statement today during his weekly legislative press conference. He said the Morganza spillway, which hasn't been opened since the early 1970's, was not part of any current plans to lower the river's level.
The Mississippi has been rising after strong rainfall that caused flooding in several Midwestern states. Officials expect the river to crest around Vicksburg, Miss. at its highest level since the 1930's around May 13.
State Rep. Major Tibaut, D-New Roads, says some landowners near the spillway have started removing cattle from areas around the levee, but he also doesn't expect it to be used except in a worst-case scenario.
If the spillway were opened it would drain water into the Atchafalaya River. The Corps of Engineers reported that if the spillway were needed, they were confident it would still be operational.

I don't see why avoyelles would be affected that much except if something happened with the atchafalaya.
avoyelles would be greatly affected. all of the northeastern portion of avoyelles and 3 miles west of the atchafalya down the whole eastern part of the parish(about 1/3 of the parish) is a floodway.

in a meeting today, that isn't what a corps official said. their emergency operations team is now patrolling levees 24 hours a day and with the rate the river is rising Morganza is definatly still in play.
they dont give a shite about the pastures, the issue is backwater flooding in Morgan City.

USACE just said if blowing up the levee does not work then the Morganza spillway will be opened up. In other words you can now write it in ink that the Morganza is going to be opened up as well the Bonnet Carre.

Earlier in the thread. The Madrid Flood Plain near Cairo, Il. It has already been evacuated and government troops are stationed to prevent people from entering the area.
