Breaker/conductor temperature will be influenced by current draw and length of time that the current is drawn. Hotter breakers are unlikely to be an indication of upcoming failure. The National Electrical Code even calls for derating (oversizing) conductors/breakers for loads that are expected to be energized for 3+ hours due to the heat created.

If you replace your hottest breaker at 6PM today, and your behavior/the weather don't change significantly, then your new breaker is likely to still be your hottest at 6PM tomorrow.

That's adorable... I bought a Flir E4 for about $1000 6 years ago. Immediately downloaded a file to reflash it to the same spec as the E8 version. There's several threads about this hack on eevblog.com Don't know if yours will have the resolution and sensitivity but mine will see small drafts around doors, windows, base, crown moulding, any kind of moisture leak, pick out electrical wiring under load. Can even see the paw prints left by a dog or cat.

Well sure, the conductor will get to a stable temperature from the current draw. If there is excess current draw causing thermal runaway the thermal portion of the breaker should trip from overload. But internal contact resistance can increase over time from arcing and corrosion buildup, right? I would imagine over the course of 30+ years under operation it may start to wear out. So if I have more heat buildup internally in the breaker than expected that might mean high contact resistance and more heat than expected under normal operation.

I may be overestimating this issue since I did field work with a NETA testing company where we were working mostly on 480V industrial switchgear and the occasional 4160V or 13.8kV equipment. Contact resistance can play a big part in those but maybe on a much smaller scale for 120V I have the images of those in my head that aren't reality . Definitely possible.

It's not high enough resolution or capable of distances for something like that. For small upclose jobs is where it is most useful, hence the lower price tag.

Would be handy for some advanced engine troubleshooting. You could look at your heads and headers to see if you have a cold cylinder.

Also can help with diagnosing issues with catalytic converters.

I'm glad you posted this info...I have been using a Flir E4 to scan low slope roofs for moisture/leaks/overall condition. I have read about the "hack" to do what you described but I didn't know where to get that info. Would a new E4 permit the reflash to an E8. You'd think Flir would combat that somehow.
