I think the Cosmic Crisp apple may be better than Honeycrisp.

Obviously, both of these sit far atop any other apple. I didn't believe there was much room for improvement on the Honeycrisp apple, but I think it's actually better.

It's a little bit more crisper, a little juicier, and the flavor is slightly different as well.

An unbelievable apple.

I may agree with you. It's amazing how much better the more recent cultivars of apples are compared to what we ate as kids.

If you ever experienced other bananas, you realize how awful this one is. There are some variation at the Asian stores that are sweeter, have better texture, and longer shelf life. They can last for weeks without going bad.

I recall eating another variation in Southeast Asia where it had seeds(totals edible) the size of peppercorns. A nice crunching feature.

Why would you do such a thing?

I haven’t tried the cosmic crisp, but honey crisp is easily my favorite apple.

cosmic crisp apples are amazing

it's just hard to justify almost $3/lb

*ETA: Planet Money did a segment on the CC apple years ago

quote:

Notably left out of the club system? Washington State. Washington growers are the apple powerhouse of the country; they produce nearly 60% of the apples in the United States. Most of those growers were still producing Red Delicious.

So Washington State University decided it was time to make its own apple. It spent millions of dollars and 20 years developing a mega hit apple. Growers in Washington took it on and have ripped out Red Delicious trees and planted the new kind. On December 1st, this apple will hit store shelves: the Cosmic Crisp. It's red. It's juicy. And for Washington farmers, a lot is riding on you liking them apples.

been waiting to try since that podcast. didn't have my first one until over Christmas in MS. it was $$$$$

It seems like that was the only apple available a couple decades ago, other than Granny Smith. I never found either to be all that great but Honeycrisp is awesome.

I was listening to a podcast talking about this apple and the fact that its development began in 1997. Compared to other crops, it seems a little crazy how long it it takes to develop new varieties and how much rides on the marketing of varieties whose trees had to be planted many years ago.

It's gonna be hard to top 2019s Grapple.

I didn't even see what 2020 FOTY was.
