Which barrel do you shoot first & why? Also do you choke them differently or the same?

Typically the bottom barrel is set to shoot first and you want a more open chock on that barrel.

I shoot top first.

One is improved cylinder, the other is "skeet"... mainly because that's the only 2 chokes that came with it.

I don't shoot a lot of O/U, but I may as I get a little older. For clays, I like to shoot the bottom barrel first, but I tend to have a high sight picture at first and "chase" the second of a double to a better sight picture. If I was shooting fowl with with an O/U I'd probably do the opposite. Weird, but I'm less likely to pull the trigger with the sights "high" over a live target.

(ETA: And I don't want to think about different chokes, so I prefer the same.)

Bottom is most always 1st.

I leave the chokes the same. Have to think about it too much otherwise.

I was told u shoot the bottom 1st because the gun doesn't jump as much compared to the top barrel. Helps to keep gun on target and or get ready for next bird

bottom first. Because an old guy who knew a lot of things told me to once. He may have been full of shite but I'm going with it.

About the only time I ever double up on chokes is skeet/skeet. Mainly because the only other set I have is full/full and if I need that I've probably fricked up the planning aspect.

Usually run the same choke in each barrel, unless I feel like challenging myself, then I'll have a tighter choke in the top barrel. I typically shoot the bottom barrel first, unless I have a different choke in the top barrel, then I'll shoot the top barrel first when the first target is farther away than the second.

Bottom is more in line with the plane/center of the gun and therefore should kick off balance less on the first fire. Therefore will allow you to get on 2nd bird easier with the top barrel.

It's what I've been told and have accepted as the truth.

In theory that's how it works. The bottom barrel being lower gives a more direct recoil where the top barrel is over the top of the stock and will create more muzzle rise. I haven't spent much time on over/unders but I never noticed any difference.

i honestly have never even looked at the selector when both barrels are loaded. i'm sure there are various theories on which to shoot first but i've never given it a thought

As several guys have said, bottom barrel first as the recoil will be less as it's more "in line" with the stock than the top barrel is, which will jump more after a shot.

For chokes: I like a modified in the bottom, and full on top for my red label that I shoot. if I'm shooting clays I have a two skeets that I use in both barrels.
