re: UCLA's choice

It's not a question of being better or not; it's a question of better match-up. If UCLA feels like they match up better with Oregon's style then they should do their best to win.
Again it's not like they just show up and not try, it's the little things like resting the guys that are a little banged up etc.

this
it's not like coaches are stupid and don't know who they match up with better
plus the whole "let stanford show their hand" angle is a biggie

This.
Stanford is a pretty decent football team, as evidenced by last night. UCLA doesn't have to go out there and take a knee every possession in order to lose. They just don't have to open up the playbook to win. They don't have to keep a guy on the field who maybe could use a rest.

You don't go into a game without the final goal to be win. Not in College football at least. And I've never heard of a College team resting starters like the NFL does, not in games against good competition at least

I dk, I don't think it will happen, sends a bad message to your team. Even if it is just not opening up the playbook, players aren't retarded (most of them anyway) they would pick up on that in a second. They'd probably lose some confidence in themselves if they realized their coach didn't have confidence in them. Either way I'm not staying up anymore to argue this it's way to fricking late
eta: plus UCLA probably gonna lose to Stanford either way

So here's the thing- UCLA can't win the BCS, which has to be #1 goal on their board (not realistic maybe, but is everybody's top goal). After that, #2 goal has to be Rose Bowl, conference title.
Forgetting for a second who they play in the last game, they are in the conference title game win or lose. To me, it is paramount to be as healthy as possible for that title game. So, you get your RB with a thigh bruise; you sit him instead of throw him into the line on short yardage. This game means nothing, having your best players ready for the big game means everything. Imagine the opposite- you wear out your RB in a desperate attempt to beat Stanford, and he's shot the next game... that's stupid.
Now, playing Stanford- Mora has NFL experience. He knows how to scout a team for a second matchup, like when he would play divisional rivals in the NFL. Sure, he'd like to win the next 2 games in routs; but he'd be more comfortable than the Stanford coach in preparing his team to replay an opponent. Don't show everything the first time, save something for the real game. Assess what worked and didn't, and have corrections in place for the next time around.
My pick is Stanford wins game 1, UCLA wins the rematch, and wins the Rose (it IS at home for him). That takes him from "nice" right now, to Pac 12 Coach of the Year. And Oregon cries foul.

Why is the Pac 12 playing non-divisional games the last week of the season? They're just asking for this to happen. Just another example of west coast hippies being clueless.

Sort of annoying this world has become a mindset of BCS or bust.
Overall record still matters in CFB to coaches, players, fans and alumni.
Where you finish in the Top 10.
UCLA (as competitors and coaches) should want to prove their the best in the conference and beat the best. Oregon whipped them last year in the fake (USC was on probation) Pac 12 title game. UCLA (one would hope in college athletics) would want revenge and a chance again at Oregon.
Finally, rematches are never good for either participant in trying to engineer a win. College football season is so short, UCLA might look forward to facing an Oregon team in the Top 5 they haven't played this year.
Regardless...it's a mess. UCLA might play Stanford twice in two weeks to win the Pac 12 and then play a Nebraska team they already beat in the Rose Bowl.
Awesome for the Bruins.

There's only one problem for the Bruins if they let Stanford win Game 1, they don't get home-field advantage for Game 2.
They won't get it if they were to play Oregon, but if Oregon State wins, they probably want to beat Stanford for the advantage.
Pac 12 has some poor scheduling at the end of the year methinks.

the worst part about this premise is that it relies on a coaching staff and players of a good college football team thinking another team is better than them. newsflash! they probably dont think that.
if you dont think that ucla WANTS TO PLAY OREGON, you are fricking high.

I am so freaking confused. Doesn't Oregon win the North with a win over Oregon State?
Nevermind. For some reason, I thought Stanford had two conference losses.

For a coach that is trying to build a program and change the culture, throwing a game this Saturday would send the wrong message to his team, ESPECIALLY coming off a huge win against USC. As a UCLA fan, I want them to to beat the tree, then hunt some duck. The ducks are beatable, we have a front 7 that can get pressure and an O that can score points, gives us a punchers chance of taking them.
From Mora's teleconference on Sunday.
Q: You know coach, I know you have said that you don’t pay attention to the scenarios, but going back to the NFL days, were you ever in a spot where the matchups in the playoffs were maybe more advantageous for you to lose a game toward the end of the season in terms of playoff pairings or seedings or what have you?
A: Are you serious?
Q: Yes.
A: No.
Q: I think what he’s asking is, if you could either play Stanford or Oregon in that game and you could have an impact on that…
A: Are you talking about thinking about losing a game this Saturday?
Q: Well…
A: No, no, no. Come on. Jiminy Christmas. If I thought that way, I should never be in this business.

You play to win the conference...the best route to do that is tank this game and play Stanford again.
Posted on 11/19/12 at 8:45 am to Tiger Ryno
i think i'd rather finish the year with two losses instead of 3 but i guess thats just crazy talk.

Something tells me based on Mora's NFL experience we may see a subtle tank from UCLA.
However, I don't think it's based at all on fear of Oregon or familiarity of Stanford.
