Square Enix sells Eidos, Crystal Dynamics, and Square Enix Montreal and major IPs attached to them, including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and more.

quote:

Square Enix is selling studios Eidos, Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix Montreal to Swedish video game and media holding company Embracer Group.

The massive $300 million deal includes the studios and all the IPs attached to them, including major franchises such as Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Guardian, Thief and more.

Considering the catalog, it wouldn't shock me to see Embracer at least break even on this within 2-3 years just from continued sales of Tomb Raider and Deus Ex games. If they were to make worthwhile revivals of Legacy of Kain and Thief then the sky is the limit.

no joke. 300 for just TR and Deus Ex seems good.

i know square kept saying the latest tomb raider games were disappointing but i thought they did well.

just a quick google and just rise of the tomb raider sold about 12 million copies as of last November.

The reboot TR trilogy sold 38 million. The next Tomb Raider is in the works now using Unreal 5 and it has been a few years since Shadow. I could see that easily hitting 15 million sold for that one.

I doubt TR was a money loser for them, so interesting move.

Embracer Group going to make some money off of this.

It's a very cheap buy for the IPs, but these studios do not make any money. They spent Naughty Dog money to just barely break even. Last Tomb Raider made 8m in profit on a 125m+ budget.

I don't know what you could really to make them profitable without laying off half the studio.

The Go series (Deus Ex Go, Hitman Go, Tomb Raider Go) are already portable.

May as well go all out with it.

The truth is Tomb Raider doesn't hold much cultural relevance anymore outside of our nostalgia, and Deus Ex (as amazing as it was to experience that story back in the day) is not inherently an IP ripe for continued milking. There's also only so many buyers out there

If anything Square Enix has a surplus of obscure and underutilized IP that doesn't move the economic needle. It's not surprising to see them want to divest low juice per squeeze properties when they can throw proceeds at stuff like FF14 (which is straight printing money) or give Yoko Taro a proper budget worthy of his brilliance/insanity

I'm more intrigued if there's anything to the Sony rumors

This. It may sound cheap if you didn't know the numbers. But those franchises were doing nothing for them. And I believe Square were pretty hands off. So buying these studios, you are inheriting the same problems.

Sony rumors

are you referring to sony purchasing square? if so i 100% agree. i think squares been wanting to be acquired itself for sometime, and they are trimming fat to make themselves more appealing.
