What is the board’s opinions of this gun. I have a chance to buy a very slightly used one for around $1000

What are you going to be using it for? Have you or will you have a chance to shoot it?

If it's in decent shape at all buy it. I've had 2 and now have the SBE3. Great guns. You won't regret it.

Hope to get back to shooting ducks. It is a friend of mine that has it - he bought it for pheasant hunting but doesn’t like it for that

I had one and it was a solid gun. It was easiest gun I’ve ever owned from a cleaning standpoint. It did not, however, perform well in sub-freezing temperatures. The action was sluggish.

But for $1,000, I’d buy another.

I have a left handed 2 and 3. Identical guns. The modified choke is rusted into the 2’s barrel. I’ve owned that gun for 11 years and NEVER had a hiccup until last Saturday on opening morning of duck season in Oklahoma. It totally stopped shooting. Just clicked on every shot. I had to use the guides super Vinci. Got back to lodge, cleaned it and it started shooting again. I had my 3 as a back up. The 2 is the most accurate shotgun I’ve ever shot in my life. The 3 shoots 100% different. It’s designed to shoot high. People tell me I’m crazy, but until you shoot both, you won’t understand it. I would buy the 2 over the 3 8 days a week.

Some higher velocity rounds would likely help. The SBE is completely inertia driven, and most powder in shotshells generate significantly lower energy in cold temps, which can make the bolt a bit “sluggish”.

You might want to check this out:

Sportsman's Warehouse

I believe that's their everyday price.

I’d rather have it than the SBE3 I have due to point of aim/ Point of impact mentioned above.

Have had mine since 2009, never had a problem. I think one of the guys mentioned that he had his modified chock rust into his...I did have a Kick's Hi Flyer rust into mine a little but it came out with a little heat.

Easiest cleaning gun you can buy and you can break it down in like 10 seconds. Not a gas gun, so it rarely is actually dirty. I just break it down after every trip to keep it lubed.

Only thing is its pretty long for me...I've had a shop bring in the stock some for my trex arms.

Also that doesn’t have the comfortech stock which makes a big difference in recoil.

SBE2 is one of the best field shotguns ever made, imho.
But like any machine. You do have to do some maintenance. Mine got a very thorough cleaning once a year.

I have had one for 15 years now and I’ve taken it through hell and back. Saltwater marshes, sub 20 temps, dozens of dunks, and who knows how many shells. It is super easy to clean and will perform very well.

As everyone else said, good deal if its in usable condition. Its tough to do better than a SBE2 for a duck gun.

I prefer Beretta, but for that price, I would buy the SBE every time.

They do but this isn't a brand issue; its a preference of inertia vs. gas, SBE/M2's are very different guns from Beretta's gas-operated duck guns. It's a preferential thing, both strong brands.

Funny how Beretta's been building guns since the 1500's, and Benelli only since 1960's.
