Skip almost lost him because of price. He didn't have a great record or personality so what did he have ?

i would honestly like to know this as well. Saban's first year at LSU was my first year so i didn't pay attention to hiring at the time.

He was essentially what Mel Tucker/Dave Aranda are right now. A young HC with a lot of coaching experience (assistant/coordinator) & a great defensive mind.

I think the fact that he spent 3 years of working under Belichick at CLE was big too.

How much the NFL power brokers and insiders thought of him and coveted him as a NFL Head Coach. I seem to recall he was offered the Colts and and Giants job before and turned them down.

Skip had nothing to do with Saban's hire. Skip was the Baseball coach at that time not the AD. Joe Dean was the one that wanted to low ball him. Dean told Emmert that I think I can get him for 900,000 a year. Emmert told him no, you give him our best offer, and that was 1.2 million I think. At that point Dean was a lame duck AD and vertually had no real power. Emmert was the power behind the hire and even lead the interviews

Highly regarded football mind, detail-oriented guy. He had Michigan State on the upswing after they'd kinda faded into mediocrity under Perles.

Also had some NFL chops as an asst/ DC and NFL teams were interested in him as a HC too.

I recall it and it was out of the blue for me and others.

Coming from Michigan state was unusual for one. Saban was not a name we knew very well either.

Then I started listening to radio reports about him with people from Michigan weighing in and it started to sink in that we had a solid coach. At the time, I had some connections at LSU and they were telling me about all of the demands Saban made on them to hire assistants and change offices and workout facilities etc and how people were getting annoyed but it was worth it. He had dozens of assistants and advisors. He was organized like nothing they had ever seen.

He literally changed the program

All I remember is that he was highly recommended to Emmert by some NFL GM - I think he was GM of the Colts. It looks like the dude was right.

I worked in the AD when we hired him. One of the biggest driving forces was the fact that he had success both on the field and in recruiting at a school that wasn't the dominant team in their state.

The idea was if he could have success while having to battle the dominant state team in Michigan, how much more successful would he be in Louisiana with no in-state competition and a better recruiting talent base.

Much like Arnsbarger, football people thought he was a defensive genius and great coach. He was a hell of a lot younger and had a recent college background. All of this was on paper. Emmert spoke to Nick one on one and he blew them away as he asked all of the why questions fans asked for years. He then asked for certain things to establish the “program” —-facilities, support staff, etc. they could see his vision at that point.

Detail oriented, my favorite trait of a coach. Find the most detail oriented guy with a vision

Maybe he was sought after by NFL teams but there were no sought after Belichick people at the same. Belichick went to the Patriots same offseason Saban went to LSU. That's to say that Saban is a Belichick guy but that could not have been a big reason for LSU to hire Saban.

The thing I remember being most significant was of course his defense and not that it was just stout but that he was doing things differently that, at the time, was described as "NFL style zone blitz". Also remember that all the offenses in the B1G hated going against his defenses because they were all based on hat-on-hat or gap blocking and you never knew where to send your guys to block.

I also remember lots of discussion about whether he would have the connections to recruit in the south.

To connect these two thoughts... I specifically remember a friend of mine from Monroe saying "if he brings a hard nose innovative defense to LSU he won't have to worry about it, coaches from Minden to Fourchon will come to him". He was speaking to the contrast between Saban's defense and Dinardo/Tepper's defense and how that alone would be THE attraction for high school coaches because that was what the SEC was all about probably without realizing it. So what he was really speaking about is attitude driven by some real changes.
