I don’t think it’s meant to be political, I think it’s just something people started doing to celebrate with friends they actually like before doing Thanksgiving with their families

Yeah, so we have a group of friends that do it the day after Thanksgiving. It's an excuse for us to bring over the leftovers and get absolutely trashed.

WTF is Friendsgiving?

This is a phenomenon mostly among younger folks started roughly 10 years ago. See, most young folks don't live in the home towns where they grew up, but most of them do come "home" for Thanksgiving. So, this results in several traditions that are often called "Friendsgiving":

1. The night before Thanksgiving when young folks hit up their hometown bars as a reunion with old friends they no longer see any other time.

2. A semi Thanksgiving style meal (often not on the day of Thanksgiving) shared by a bunch of friends who aren't related.

See, for a lot of young folks, Thanksgiving with family is actually a really stressful event. Holiday travel is a big pain, relatives tend to nit-pick them about them living so far away for work or their lifestyles, arguments are a guarantee, and there's often times stupid political bull shite brought up by both progressive and conservative family members after they start drinking. For those who don't have a lot of family, holidays are super lonely, too.

So, this leads to a lot of young folks trying to find a way to have some fun with the season outside of being with their families. So, friends get together in a separate gathering that's not at the same time to catch up and make coming into town to see their families a little more tolerable.

Finally, there's a lot of young folks who either don't have a lot of living family, don't have the resources to travel across the country to see them, or aren't on good terms with their living family, so having a group of close friends to celebrate with instead of uncles and grandparents can be an excellent way to cope with loneliness around the Holidays.

I’m pretty sure it’s just an event held around thanksgiving for friends, since you spend thanksgiving day with your family…people make and bake food.

I don’t see why this is a bother to anyone. It’s not held on the holiday that I’m aware.

So it’s not actually a white progressive plan to take over the world?

It depends on where you are. In large cities, it's often held on the day because it's a gathering of all of the friends who either don't have families to go visit or can't afford to make the trip this year.

In rural areas, suburbs, and small cities, it's typically held on a different day, often on Wednesday night. It can be a thanksgiving meal and/or a bar crawl.

Correct. It's literally just a wholesome reunion with friends that you don't get to see often enough.

One of my friends used to host one on Black Friday that was always a straight rager.

I usually host something similar between Christmas and New Years that turns into an open jam for all my home town musician friends that now live all over the country.

The amount of people triggered in this thread by the name of a fake holiday is both amazing and sad.

Some people in this thread will lose their minds when they hear about friendsmas.

Millennials just had to put a label on it so they can hashtag it to death on social media, and make sure everyone knows they're a part of the trend

My sister is nearly 50 and her husband is 60. They were doing Friendsgiving in the 90s.

And TBH the whole term "Friendsgiving" could have very well started with the show Friends... Or sex and the city or some other 90s show. It is definitely a 90s thing. Millennials like myself were 10. We weren't the ones that started it. Though I'm sure we probably made it more popular.

This. Nearly every sitcom that revolves around childless adults has an episode about a bunch of friends having Thanksgiving together instead of doing it with their actual families. This isn't a new concept. The only twist is that some people now do more than one "Thanksgiving" style meal that week so that they can have a celebration with family and a celebration with their friends.

this is for another thread, but I think the rapid acceleration of this trend is going to have some pretty massive societal ramifications

Probably already has TBH

The reasons for this trend are partially social, but mostly economic.

Friendsgiving is just another made up thing for liberal cult members to gather. They're probably already talking about cancelling the term "dark meat" too.

I 100% get why it’s happening. It’s often all but unavoidable.

I don’t think it makes for a healthy culture though.

Or for transplants that can’t make it home but want to get together for the holiday experience still

Not wildly controversial to my knowledge but apparently upsetting to some
