Pretty surprised he’s retiring. Had a great year this year and the Giants near term future is bright. He’s won everything that matters though and catching is rough so hard to blame him

He has been hurt the past few years and has 4 really young children which is why he didn't play last year. Maybe walking away with his health and to spend time with his family.

Posey's a great career hitter, but he didn't even catch 10,000 innings over his career. That's really not that many for a catcher.

Eta: I'm not saying he's not HOF worthy. He is. I'm saying he nor Mauer are the best catchers of the 2000s. Hell Mauer spent almost as much time at 1B.

I mean piazza and pudge played in the 2000s. After that, no catchers sniff Mauer or Posey’s resume (please don’t say yadier Molina or Jorge posada)

I am not ok with this

This was one of his best years. .304 w/ 18 HRs and 4.9 WAR which was the highest among catchers in mlb this year. Gonna end it on top i guess

Sorry but if you're talking specifically catcher you have to include Yadi. He's caught almost twice as many innings as Posey and 10k more than Mauer in that time frame. If you think all a catcher's value comes from hitting then ok, but there's a reason that Posey and Mauer played a significant amount of 1B. It's because their hitting was more valuable. If you want to say that Mauer and Posey are better hitters than Molina that's a no brainer. Better catcher? Nope.

Yeah Yadi has way more hits, HR's, RBIs, runs, better strikeout percentage, and a ton more innings at catcher and a huge gap defensively. Not to mention playing to age 40 and all at C too.

Posey 57.6 fwar Yadi 55.6.

Posey defense rating 217.2, Yadi 381.3.

From a baseball player prospective buster > Molina. As a catcher Molina > buster and it’s not really that close

Makes me feel old. I remember seeing him at FSU games during my time as a grad student. I’ve always been a fan.

Buster Posey will announce his retirement today, walking away from a $22 million option that the Giants picked up last month

Fun fact, his real first name is Gerald.

Can't vote first ballot for a guy named Gerald.

2nd ballot maybe.

Surprised by this, hope he’s okay.. He’s a HOF catcher. But that position takes it toll. No idea how Molina has made it as long as he has.

Buster Posey should be eliminated for HOF contention for bringing that sissy arse home plate rule.

Be a man.

Piazza was an elite hitter at the C position, but he was absolute garbage behind the plate. And the stats back that up. Molina certainly does sniff Posey’s resume. The innings Molina has logged behind the plate is incredible, as are his staff ERAs with a crap ton of retreads and mediocrity on the mound.

Dang, was an All Star and hit .304 this season (113 games)

Kind of reminds me of Will Clark. He was 36 and hit .318 his last year (.345 with the Cardinals in the second half of 2000). He probably could have hit .300 for another 4 years and the Cardinals wanted him back. But, he stepped away for family reasons.

Would being a man be like getting taken out breaking you ankle and knee, coming back the next year to win MVP, comeback player of the year and the MLB batting title (.336), and lead your team to win the WS?
