Guns on movie sets: “Unreasonable and unrealistic” to expect actor to check load

I’ve gone round and round with a few on Twitter about the Baldwin thing.
I’ve gone out of my way to not blame him personally and make the point that, if SOP is to rely completely on the armorer, that probably needs to change and introduce a requirement that the actor check the magazine (or cylinder) and chamber in front of the armorer when it’s handed off. Two sets of eyes on a 5 second check.
It boggles my mind how so many insist this is an attack on Baldwin for mocking Trump and that it’s unreasonable and unrealistic to expect an actor to do this. They say things like they are not trained or that the additional handling creates an opportunity for loss of control.
I have no way to relate to this level of intentional ignorance.

They would just act like they are checking it.

That is basic gun safety. He is an idiot.

Why are Hollywood and actors portraying characters who use guns?
They hate guns. They shouldn't use guns to make money.
Seriously though, why are live rounds even allowed on a set?

The problem comes when you hire people who hate guns and everything they stand for, they don’t know what to do with them or how to handle them.
Yet ironically they have no problems glorifying them and profiting off of them

Don’t take it personally, you might have done an excellent job with yours, but if you did you’re badly outnumbered.
That’s why I think this country has to divide. The rot is too deep in places to fix without a lot of suffering and I’d rather not suffer with them

I am no fan of Baldwin and I don’t know all the specifics.
But it appears there was a huge screw up with the armorer/gun handler on the set.
I don’t know if he was using the gun as prescribed in a scene or if this is some type of accidental discharge scenario outside of the scene.
Regardless, the armorer is supposed to keep the firearm secure and make it safe for the actor to use.
As others have stated it doesn’t make much sense to have live ammo anywhere near a set.

Why would you even continue debating them?
Every responsible gun owner will know if there are live rounds in the chamber or not.
Every one.

Kind of like, “Unreasonable and unrealistic” to expect police officer to not shoot a criminal attacking them or others with weapons?

This. So much this.
I hope Baldwin gets prosecuted.

Really it’s not ABs fault. They had a guy. It’s his only f’ing job. He yelled “cold gun”. But obviously didn’t verify.
The problem as someone already pointed out, you hire someone who probably hates guns and likely doesn’t know shite about them, then maybe you should consider the possibility people could end up dead.

Lots of conflicting info.
The armorer was clearly incompetent at her job.
The Assistant Director apparently pulled a handgun off a table, declared it a cold gun, and handed it to Baldwin without checking it first. This guy has a history of being unsafe with stunts and guns to the point where he was fired more than once.
There are also claims that the crew was spending their off hours in the set target shooting, accounting for the live ammo found on the set.
They also had multiple discharges on at least one prior day of shooting which resulted in crew walkouts over safety.
This just seems like a complete and total clusterfrick from numerous angles and it is amazing no one else got killed before now.
Much like the shooting of The Crow that killed Brandon Lee, it was a “cursed shoot” because people kept fricking up and doing things in an unsafe manner that finally got someone killed.

There are people on this site arguing this. Totally preposterous.

I sure hope the next time an actor has to choose between the green wire and the yellow wire, he/she has checked to make sure the nuclear device isn't actually armed.

Was it live ammo or blanks? It is was live ammo, why the hell is it even on a set?
ETA: Also why the hell was he even point a firearm at a producer?

It was a she, not a he. It was her first job as lead.
She said she was afraid earlier she wasn't ready.
Diversity and equity in action. Meritocracy is overrated. They wanted diversity.
They got diversity.
They quite literally died on that hill.

If Baldwin was proficient enough to handle, point, and pull the trigger on this REVOLVER, he was competent enough to release the cylinder, swing it out and check its contents. It takes 1.5 seconds!!! If the revolver was a period piece such as an 1873 Colt the cylinder is released to free turn upon half cocking it and allows for loading or unloading or cylinder inspection. He could have been instructed by anybody in a minute or two how to do it. How did he know how to pull the trigger? Also, a revolver's cylinder allows a person to see the front of the cylinder (it's open) where live rounds bullets are exposed. A simple view of that part of the revolver ( don't point the weapon at your face or others) will reveal if a live round is ready to revolve into position to fire upon pulling the trigger. If the live round is already in position in front the barrel it will rotate out of firing position upon trigger pulling or hammer pullback.
It's simple people 3 people are responsible and should be charged. The Armorer, the assistant director and Alec Baldwin. A fourth, the person who loaded the gun is unknown at this time.
A link to a picture of a period revolver is below. Those white spots in the cylinder are the fronts of bullets.
