Toy Story 3: Were Lotso’s initial expectations really that unreasonable?

Now that my son is old enough to enjoy Pixar movies, we watch them pretty regularly. And he’s obsessed with Woody and the TS movies. So we watch 3 a good bit since it’s the best of the four films.
And watching now, I can’t help but think that Lotso’s “rules” for new toys aren’t really that unreasonable. New toys at Sunnyside have to come in and pay their dues with the young kids in the Caterpillar Room and sort of “earn” their right to get thrown in with the older kids of the Butterfly Room who play less rough. But a lot of these toys are made for young kids anyway, so why is it such a problem that the kids play tough with them? They aren’t experimenting with them like Sid did in the first one.
And even in the end when Ken and Barbie are running things, the toys take breaks and rest from the young kids. Well they could’ve done that the entire time, even under Lotso. Seems like he would go for that idea.
Now obviously he is insane in the end, and pretty ruthless with how he treats the group with acting like a prison warden. But that was after they continuously ignored the set up at Sunnyside and broke the rules over and over (and escaped). So I’m not trying to defend his ultimate actions in the end (especially at the dump/incinerator). But at least initially, his intentions seem relatively reasonable. And it seems like most of the existing toys at SS should be mad at some uppity group waltzing in and expecting to be put in the Butterfly Room with no respect for how things work there.
Yes, this is sort of tongue in cheek a little bit, but all in all Lotso isn’t some insane dictator for the first half of the movie.

1) All the toys die if they’re there long enough. They need to share the load.
2) Lotso wasn’t about fairness but power. Lotso was a genocidal monster and the second most evil Pixar villain after Syndrome and possibly tied with Ernesto De La Cruz.

The “sharing the load” was an admirable platitude, but it was just that, PR. It was really all about control. They weren’t “sharing the load”, he was sending dissidents to die to protect himself.

Toy story 3 is not the best. Toy story 2 is the best.

Cocomo,
Yeah but what about that 2nd half of the movie

3 was still pretty dang good but two was the best
4 was a disgrace and never should have been made. It totally ruined the perfect ending to the series at the end of 3

You may as well have said this.

Exactly. Sharing the load means the new toys (fresh toys) deal with the Caterpillar kids and earn their way into the Butterfly kids. That seems extraordinarily fair.

Power, sure. But he didn't turn insane until Andy's group of toys started trying to have things their own way and not respect the ways of Sunnyside. Once pushed, Lotso had to flex on them. Seems reasonable.
Also, not to excuse his behavior (but I know that's sort of what I am doing), but he was betrayed by his kid, Daisy (and her parents - more them than her, but still), when he was forgotten and then replaced. It's like an adult committing crimes that was molested as a child...it doesn't excuse the behavior obviously, but does possibly explain it.

Spoken like a true victim of having his heart broken by being thrown away by people that he thought loved him.
And Toy Story 2 is the third best in the series, at best. TS3 is masterful. The original is fantastic and a great introduction to kick everything off. Hell, even 4 is better than I thought it would be...4's main problem is that 3 ended so perfectly that they should have never made it. I do like 4, but the end of 3 is just so great with Andy giving them all to Bonnie and playing with them one last time before college. 2 is very good, but it suffers IMO with the whole traveling to the highrise and Al's Toy Barn. Plus I wasn't a huge fan of the Zurg storyline. The best things about 2 are that it introduced Jessie and Bullseye, and the "When She Loved Me" clip (which is fantastic in its own right).

You mean after Andy's toys ignore ranks and sacrifices of others toys and refuse to play ball?

BTW, let me add that I like that you've taken the "Lotso is a reasonable guy that was misunderstood and Andy's toys ultimately drove him off the deep end" position.

Kind of has a North Korea vibe to it

We've now connected Toy Story to molestation, Nazis, North Korea and Communism.
Well done M/TV Board.

Lotso and his companions created a functioning society where one had to pay his dues to make it.
The Toy Story Group comes in thinking they are special... but they aren't. We as the audience are supposed to go along with the Toy Story Group because that is who we have been raised to believe are the heroes.
But what if we grew up with Lotso and crew and saw their story and then all of a sudden a bunch of entitled new toys come in and try to screw up the system.
Basically its a bunch of millennials coming in and trying to change stuff just because they have to rent an apartment instead of owning a home.
I feel for Lotso and crew.... Do I think he handled the right way? Not necessarily but I also don't think that the toy story crew were very kind.

To be fair, many of us venture over from the OT where such logical connections are a regular
