Depends on the source, pre internet days, etc but at least 2 or 3 people said no. No one was excited when he was hired, really knew who he was, etc. No one really liked him personally at first. His nickname was “Nick the Dick”

He was perfect coach for LSU.

Woodward was brought in to make this hire. The only way this gets screw up is if the SJWs and political idiots get involved.

It’s a top 5 job and we have a skilled, aggressive competent AD. (Notice the lack of real leaks)

Saban commanded the political powers into submission.

Whichever coach has that prowess and ability to recruit, develop talent fast, and instill a system of excellence for the long haul is ok by me!

LSU didn’t even know he was interested until Sexton reached out.

This is a joke, right? I can’t imagine anyone wanting Rich Rod over him after what he had done at LSU.

Funny that Mel Tucker is at the exact same program and has them in a similar position the year LSU hired Saban away. Just saying’

Not a joke. RR turned it down, Bama’s AD went into panic mode and threw a Hail Mary at Saban when Dolphins weren’t doing well.

Mal Moore was a clown AD until he lucked into the Hail Mary.

I remember when George W. Bush was giving the commencement speech the year of the Natty, Saban walked in late and got a Standing O in the middle if W's speech. I think W said something like, "I wish I had his approval rating!"

Paul Finebaum said something about Rich Rod's wife the day he interviewed, can't even remember what it was, but that's why he backed out

Joe Dean was going after another Dinardo type hire (and probably would have hired another Sullivan & then hoped his buyout wouldn’t work out) and wasn’t going to pay anyone what we paid Saban. I am sure he put some offers out to get be able to say they said no. Emmert pushed Saban through once Saban showed interest.

Saban was a big change over the hirings that followed Rein’s plane crash for every head coach outside of maybe Arnsparger.

From the moment they interviewed Nick, he was first choice. Emmert even matched the salary, which was way more than Dean said they could do and Dean was pissed. Emmert knew immediately that Saban was the real deal. Saban was actually interviewing LSU - why hadn't we had the success, what would need to change, etc.

The legend of Mark Emmert,s involvement is more urban legend than fact. Gil Brandt of the Cowboys had initially suggested to Joe Dean that he ought to look at Saban. Dean was initially focused on other coaches but no one was standing out. Tuesday before Thanksgiving Sexton got a call from Saban saying he was tired of being drug around by the AD at MSU and instructed Sexton to get in touch with anyone else. Sexton was partners with Sean Tuohy in the Taco Bell franchise. Tuohy was friends with Joe Dean from basketball connection. Sexton asked if Tuohy could call Dean and ask if he wanted to talk to Saban. Tuohy calls Dean. Dean says yes he would. They set up a meeting for that Saturday at Sexton's house. Dean tells Emmert and both get a little intrigued. Dean calls Brandt back Brandt tells him that Saban could solve a lot of problems. Dean, Emmert, Charles Weems and a dude named Gill go up to Memphis early on Saturday morning and meet with Sexton and Saban. Sexton and Dean did most of the deal.Sunday morning Dean calls Emmert and says for 1.2 a year Saban is ours. Emmert asks what the buyout is. Dean tells him it is a low buyout. Emmert says let's make the deal. That Tuesday Saban is introduced. No one had any clue because so what if Dean was in Memphis there was no one in Memphis.

Emmert's only contribution was him saying" Yes, make the deal." That hire was 95% Joe Dean. Maybe the one good hire he ever made.

Yep Mal Moore was about to lose his job. He rolled the dice and went to Miami of his own volition and showed up at the house unannounced and caught Terri Saban right as she was getting home. He introduced himself and started selling Terri Saban on the Alabama job.

Then Moore calls Paul Jr and Paul Jr says he can make a deal for 8 years at 4 million a year if Saban wants it.

How old are you? Nick had the greatest love hate affair with this fan base of all time. He won a ship. But he also lost less than three games exactly once. He lost to UAB. And he made questionable personnel decisions. Randle over Russel? Booty over Davey? And he was 0-2 against the greatest coach of that era. And the fans let him hear it every, single day. No body appreciated nick until his third year at Bama.

This has been debunked. The Pres is apparently competitive AF and just wants to win.

Actually, they asked Sexton if Tubbs was interested and he said, "No, but Nick Saban is."
