California moves to ban oil & gas wells within 1 mile of homes, schools

I'm sure this will fix their energy crunch issues in California.
"California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday proposed a statewide 3,200-foot buffer zone to separate homes, schools, hospitals and other populated areas from oil and gas wells."
"California is the seventh-largest oil-producing state in the country but has no rule or standard for the distance that active wells need to be from communities. More than 2 million state residents live within 2,500 feet of an operational oil and gas well, and another 5 million, or 14% of the California’s population, are within 1 mile, according to an analysis by the non-profit FracTracker Alliance."
"People who live near oil and gas drilling sites are at greater risk of preterm births, asthma, respiratory disease and cancer, research shows. Oil drilling disproportionately affects Black and Latino residents in major oil fields like Los Angeles County and Kern County."
“California is taking a significant step to protect the more than two million residents who live within a half-mile of oil drilling sites, many in low-income and communities of color.”
“The largest statewide buffer zone in the country is a huge victory for frontline communities that have fought for health protections for years,” Kassie Siegel, director of the Center for Biological Diversity’s Climate Law Institute, said in a statement."

which came first the wells or the houses and schools?

Is this for new wells, or existing also?

Sure. We’re in an oil crisis and they want to produce less of it. Great thinking

Hattiesburg, MS, once did a version of this on “adult entertainment businesses” within X distance of a church, with the express intent of closing down the titty bar by the National Guard camp on the outskirts.
The video store a friend of mine worked at was collateral damage because it had a sizable business in porno sales / rentals. OTOH, it had to offend someone’s Baptist sensibilities when that location became a drive through liquor store after the video store was shut down.

people in da parish built neighborhoods right on the other side of page fences from refineries and then complained about the smell, traffic and whatnot.
same thing with the kaiser plant.

Lot of that everywhere.
I went to a school that was in the middle of an affluent neighborhood and tons of people would piss and moan about the traffic caused by the school.
The school had been there about 30 years before I graduated so it clearly predated most people who were complaining having moved into the area.

So private land owners no longer own the mineral rights or ability to extract from their own property?
We’re those homes, schools, hospitals, etc. there when drilling started?

Just how many active drilling rigs are working in California?
Posted on 10/21/21 at 4:41 pm to TigerFred
New rigs? Probably not many.
Existing rigs? You would be surprised. Bakersfield alone is a major oil city outside of LA and is the 9th largest city in the state.

Move to the next section over and drill back under the targeted 640. This happens all the time, but I guess the image is more important than actual impact.

Can directional be an issue with this?

Exactly, those making laws are too often ignorant of the industry they are attempting to regulate.

It’s takes a special sort of stupid to be a Democrat. This move by California only further proves this point. Literally every idea they have is terrible and even harmful to the county, city, state, or the country. And what’s worse, we have decades of Democrat actions that have turned things to shite. Example after example. But instead of learning from their mistakes they double down on them. So on top of being stupid, they refuse to learn anything. It’s baffling to me how any sane, intelligent, logical person could call themselves a Democrat.

Costs capital that could be expended in other regions, areas, or states. It'd have to be a really good well. Likely anything that fits this bill will just be capped, plugged and abandoned.
