Pro Athletes Are Paid Too Much

MLB, NFL and NBA. You can literally play basketball and get paid for it. NFL Sunday Ticket is like $300. MLB players will just follow the money.
You can still be a nobody on a 53 man roster and get millions.
These 3 leagues have the same problems different ways.

Most athletes play in a salary cap league. So the argument could be made that they are paid less than their fair market value

Outstanding analysis OP. Clearly everyone should have an issue with someone being in the top 0.000001% of their profession, which rakes in billions of dollars of revenue annually, getting fairly compensated with their piece of the pie.

I’m really confused by this thread.

The average NFL player in underpaid

Ok that's ridicules along with the other nonsense comments. If he's paid too little he can leave.

Yep, free market, but it's pretty ridiculous. Some of those guys play little to nothing, but can walk away rich. I'm jealous.
The bigger money starts with the 2nd contract.
But you have to remember, those entourages cost a lot of money to keep going.

When someone can do something that attracts millions of viewers by doing something less than a thousand people can do at their level… The market for that is incredibly high, right or wrong

In your opinion, what is the most a single pro athlete should be allowed to earn? What should be the median salary for a pro athlete?

If they get paid market value, I don’t see the problem. Make what you can, when you can.
With that said, I think the fact that these guys are ‘worth’ hundreds of millions reflects a society that has messed up priorities. Firefighters, police officers, etc need to be paid more. That will also increase the number of folks that don’t mind being civil servants, and you can better weed out the shite. Our society will complain about tax dollars going to those jobs before they’d complain about funding a retractable roof stadium.
Again, make what you can, when you can. But all we’ve done is put idiots like Lebron on a pedestal, and that’s not fun.

I find it weird how much more often people go after athletes for “making too much” rather than other entertainers like musicians, actors, or anyone big in those industries.
But if you’re going to criticize this, go after people’s priorities. These athletes are making a lot because they are the primary attraction in multi-billion dollar industries.
I think only in poor or hardcore socialist countries are major league pro athletes not making a ton of money compared to the country’s average person.
Also OP started this same exact thread that got to multiple pages like 2 months ago. Not sure why he feels the need to do this again. He barely responded or defended his argument in the last one either.
