Years ago I worked for Triad hospital corporation, the worst, most dishonest corporation ever known. They were replacing all the old computers with new ones and taking the old ones to the dump. Since I had hundreds of policies and procedures on the old one I asked if I could buy it and use it at home for work. After weeks of discussions they said no and tossed it in the dump. Anyways, yeah I kept an old laptop friend from last employer, but it had issues and old.

normally you wont get your last paycheck until you turn everything in to them.

that said, if you never once used it there may be no digital record you have it so they dont know you have it, since many companies dont keep great records of things like that, you may be able to steal it, but why would you want to? it leaves a cloud over your head if they ever find you did in fact get one you never returned and then they will come after you for theft

Return it after you take off all of your non-work related files and browser bookmarks, etc. They may ask for it someday. It is not worth the risk. Windows 7???

Depends on the State. You can still $900 worth of goods/merchandise per day in California and they will not prosecute.

Find someone in management that quit after you, then say you were told to return it to him/her.

They want you to keep it to make up for the unethical way they treated you.

You really want a $700 laptop that has all sorts of security, lack of transparency, and preinstalled software that can track you?

But under normal conditions, it wouldnt shock me if a company doesnt care about a 5 year old laptop (other than maybe confidential/proprietary info stored)

Uhhh, yeah. That’s really the ONLY thing an actual good company really cares about. My company laptop is a complete piece of shite and when they ask me to trade it in over the next year or two, I’m going to request to go full Office Space on it and return it in pieces. Never get a Microsoft Surface.

I would give them the courtesy of a single email asking for a box and a prepaid shipping label. That’s as far as I would go.
