All of this to me does say as much about Zion and Family as it does about our FO.
I understand wanting to win. He has played 90 games.
This makes them come across kind of like jerkoffs.
Makes them sound like soft divas. They should be embarrassed this got out and it's absolute trash that we the fans have to read reports like this already.

The entire "Zion wants out" is a result of not winning.
What needs to happen is Griff needs to go and sit down with Zion and his family and show them video of him half assing it on defense and making low IQ plays in crunch time, while showing up out of shape, then have a reality check and tell them, you want to win this is what you need to do.
Until that happens, Zion won't win anything

Would somebody please be kind enough explain to an English dude the massively overly complicated contract scenario playing out?
I was always under the impression that after the first 4 years of the rookie contract (much like BI and Zo) you either let them walk, sign them to a max extension or let them go to RFA and match if you want. Basically controlling their destiny.
But I’m hearing there’s a ‘get out’ where Zion could potentially ‘opt out’ and sign a ‘qualifying offer’ …whatever the frick that is.. and then becomes a UFA the next season? So in 2 years time he could walk? Even though that mean he would be leaving a shite tonne of money on the table and the highest profile player to do that was a meagre Greg Munroe =|

I can't say I didn't tell you guys this was coming but I did.

That's how Restricted Free Agency works.
They can re-sign. Or.
They can sign a Qualifying Offer. They play one year under that QO. And then they are a Unrestricted Free Agent.
There's a reason why almost no player ever has done it. It is a massive risk and it leaves a substantial amount of money on the table.
Its better to get your money and then demand a trade a year or two later.

Tbh I don’t entirely hate this. The nba is and has been changing. Whether it’s zion or some other young star it’s shite or get off the pot these days. Kinda sucks but that’s life.
Sucks that this leak is public, but I don’t have THAT big of a problem with zion and co letting the FO know that we need to get our arse in gear. We have a mega asset warchest and zion is entering year 3. Time to start winning.

I would rather he and his stepfather handle it entirely internally for the first few years.
Once it reaches a point where a trade has to be made, leak it public if you want.

More from The Athletic:
quote:
At a November 2019 game in Phoenix, I watched as Griffin left his seat during a timeout, went to the bench and whispered something to trainer Aaron Nelson, who then walked over to Gentry and said something, who then signaled for a substitution. Sources say this was not the only time this happened.

If it truly is Zion who is pissed and made public like this, that is shocking.
Been in the league for 2 years and injured for 1/3rd of that time and already stamping feet.
Sure things aren’t perfect but frick me… how long has Booker been grinding in Phoenix? How many years did it take for the 76ers to get there? Giannis to make deep playoff runs?

And the other side of the coin.. if it’s his ‘family’ …
frick off and let the man play.

Lol Tubby ain't leading a team to a championship unless its piggybacking off another star. That dude is unreliable, injury prone, and even though his point average is good it's a lot of empty points. That guy is Anthony Davis 2.0.

Griff has made his share of mistakes but Zion has had some rough moments to.
He came into summer league in terrible shape.
Got hurt in preseason missing basically 2/3 the season.
Then when the bubble started he came in and everbody was talking about how great of shape he was in then he left the bubble for 2 weeks and came back in horrible shape (I still can't understand how a professional athlete can get that out of shape in 2 weeks)
Then this year he comes out and for the first half of the year he looked like he had no interest in playing D.
And some people like this about Zion but I wish he would complain more to the refs people talk about Luka but his complaining works he gets the calls.
But with all our problems it just takes a couple of just solid moves and the narrative is completely different (see the Hawks signing Galo and Bogdan)
Come Monday the media would have moved on to how either the (Nets, Bucks, Sixers, Clippers, or Jazz) choked and how this player is unhappy and how they need to fire there coach and blow it up.

Marc Spears just said on The Jump that he hates to see someone in Zion's family speak for him and that if he has something to say he should say it. Boom. Then referenced CP3 and AD and how sensitive we are to this crap.
Hope he sees the media talk and is either pissed at his family or embarrassed.

I’m thinking yesterday’s firing of SVG is a consequence of this news story.. they’ve just been released in reverse order.
Griff knew Zion was pissed, spoke to him, actioned as a consequence to appease him. Story came out a few days late… old news, move on!

It's just not going to help. For whatever reason, the Pelicans are just not a hip team to play for
I’m sure I’ll get downvoted, but man they screwed up when we rebranded. The Pelicans are a baseball team. We should have been the VooDoo. Could’ve had the voodoo man as a mascot. We would lead the league in merchandise sales and would be the hip team to play for. Would have been one of the best rebrands ever.
The Bensons really dropped the ball…

No doubt a bad head coach hire but the talent on the team is very lacking and that is another area of failure by the GM

Question - what FANS are happy with the state of the pelicans? If the fans aren't happy then why should the players be happy?

As much as I can't stand Lebron, even he kept quiet and grinded it out in cleveland for 7 years before he started the "taking my talents to..." trend... Granted he was playing for his hometown.
Zion has to be one of the youngest stars to pull this card, after only 2 years with an organization. For being characterized as a humble kid, he hasn't seemed very humble at all.
