The balk was because you have to throw to a base. He didn’t.

The runner hasn’t stolen a base all year I don’t think.
There was no real attempt to pick off the runner. That wasn't their play.

A sequence of moves by the manager with purpose that wasn't executed.

The short answer is that the pitcher was shell shocked. He looked uncomfortable as hell.

Oregon's catcher threw his hands up

I wondered if he was trying to call time

I thought it was a timing or indicator signal for the corners to crash designed to look like confusion. I could be over thinking.

I will explain it to you as soon as you explain why the Oregon coach continues to allow his pitchers to throw fastballs in the zone to Dugas. He clearly didn’t scout the lineup or learn from Sunday.

Pretty sure the balk was called because the pitcher was still mounted on the rubber when he threw to first base. Once you mount the rubber, you either throw the pitch or if you're going for a pickoff, you have to dismount the rubber first before throwing to a base other than home.

Just read the replies before posting. It would have saved you.

The balk was for throwing to a base that was not covered by a defensive player.

From Wikipedia

A Balk is called if:
Attempts to throw to a fielder in a spot not directly at a base - This was the case that happened in the eighth inning of last nights game.

Also:
A pitcher is not required to step off the rubber before throwing to an occupied base in a pick-off attempt. With one foot on the rubber in either the windup position or the "set" position, the pitcher may either: 1) deliver the ball to the batter: 2) throw to a base for a pickoff; or 3) step off the rubber.[5]

What impressed me was that Beloso and Thompson were all over that call immediately. It's not a very well known rule.

Remember the 5-3 (53) fake? Pitcher steps off of the rubber, fakes a throw to third and the wheels around and throws to first to try to get that guy napping.

Ackchyually....The 5-3 pickoff play does not involve step-off. Once the pitcher steps off he can do whatever he wants short of shaking his dick at the 3rd base umpire.

So pitcher should have threw a roller towards the bag even though 1st baseman was temporarily vacated. Runners likely couldn’t have advanced.

It's not? Everyone that plays baseball at the collegiate level should know this rule.

Runner from 3rd would definitely take off for home in that situation

He committed to throwing to first base and then didn’t because the first baseman was crashing in. Once you commit you have to throw

Basically the pitcher cannot throw to unoccupied base during a pickoff attempt. 1st baseman was crashing down to cover the bunt attempt.
