College football programs that, while not elite, always seem to play fundamentally sound?

The first that comes to mind for me is iowa.
I cannot remember the last time an Iowa team that wasn’t good in the trenches.
Always seem to play good assignment defense. Good tackling
Yes, they often get beaten bad by SEC teams in bowl games, but that’s another story
Seriously....when was the last time the Iowa Hawkeyes didn’t have a well coached defensive line/run defense?

Wisconsin comes to mind first for me.

Wisconsin. Solid on D, really good O-line, and a great RB. Usually only lose to teams that are more athletic (i.e. OSU).

For a period of time, Michigan St. seemed to be that kind of team.

Iowa, Northwestern, Wisconsin first ones that come to mind.

Northwestern used to be that way, but in recent years they are either quite good or quite bad.

Until Muschamp happened, South Carolina was in this category for about 20 years. Even when bad, they've had solid d-lines, wideouts, and secondaries.

Boise State, TCU, Duke

Kansas State, Iowa, and Wisconsin are teams who never seem to beat themselves. They're good on special teams and won't kill themselves with turnovers.
