Republican House lawmakers on Thursday began advancing a proposal to offer Louisiana residents receiving unemployment up to $1,000 to go back to work, but only if they give up their right to claim jobless benefits for six months. GOP lawmakers on the House labor committee added the language pushed by Rep. Mike Echols into a separate measure that sought to modestly increase the maximum weekly unemployment benefit offered in Louisiana. The vote to add the incentive provision was 6-5, with Republicans supporting it and Democrats in opposition. The idea of a one-time bonus payment stems from Republican claims that expanded federal jobless benefits have depressed people’s interest in returning to employment, leaving businesses with difficulty finding workers as they dig out of the pandemic’s damage. “The intent of this legislation is to get people back to work as quickly as possible,” said Echols, a Monroe Republican. “Our businesses are struggling in this state, and this is an incentive.
Stolen from the Poli Board but I figured reading this would be a good way for many of you to start your Friday.

Dumbest legislature in the entire US. Some of the shite these idiots do (or don't do) is completely baffling. We'll try to pass something setup from the beginning for abuse and waste... but fail to pass things that could bring actual serious dollars in due to tired morality arguments.

A much easier and cheaper solution would be to go back to normal with unemployment. Just cut them off and they can either sink or swim.

Dumb but not shocked
How about just stop Unemployment handouts for able bodied people?
How about just stop Unemployment handouts for able bodied people?

Is this retroactive for those who have been working this entire time or just for bums?

How about they just stop the unemployment payments and force the lazy arse moochers to find a job.
Sink or swim, Baby. Sink or swim.
Sink or swim, Baby. Sink or swim.

Or...ya know...maybe end the extra UE benefits like every other state is doing

Louisiana needs to suspend the additional federal UI benefits and push New Orleans to eliminate all Covid restrictions.
Too many people in the restaurant and hospitality industry that are staying home because there isn’t a carrot for them. Business is down because of the restrictions so they aren’t going to pull in enough income to justify turning down those government dollars.
Edwards isn’t going to push the mayor of New Orleans to do anything. She’s probably the 3rd or 4th most powerful Democrat in the state.

Louisiana is so fricked. I spent 30 years as a LA resident. Got tired of paying LA state taxes just so a bunch of no good freeloaders could sit around and do nothing. I bought a second home/rental property in FL, and the first thing I did was become a FL resident. No more state taxes for me ever again! Oh, and my rental property in FL pays for my LA mortgage. I recommend this to anyone who can do the same. Just stop paying LA taxes. They can figure it out in BR.

Better to start rewarding those that work. Pay a benefit to those who have been employed for the last 6 months and say you will do it again in 6 months. Watch what happens

Or, oh i dont know... stop paying people to be lazy fricks to begin with.

Can I get that bonus if I never stopped working?
