Needs to appeal to a global audience

That is code for China. Yep, it’s fricked.

I'm hoping and praying that the themes Tolkien established in the universe he created are present in the Amazon series. I have my doubts, however, as religious symbolism and mythology are currently out of style. Case in point, the Tolkien biopic that was released a few years back never once mentioned his religious beliefs. Beliefs, I might add, that were central to who he was and one of the main driving forces behind the novels he wrote. Catholicism absolutely defined who he was as a person and an author. Yet the biopic never once touched it.

Billion dollars wasted... why?

Frick this.

They waited until Christopher Tolkien died before they trashed his father‘s legacy.

Talk about a reach, no where in the article does it say that. They're just saying they needs it to be a global success due to the massive cost associated with the production of the show.

It's impressive that y'all try to find some wrong with everything you read, it must be exhausting to constantly think this way.

That is industry jargon for China. Trust me here. It’s like saying “We need to appeal to the urban market”. You know what that means. Global appeal means “Let’s make it as watered down, simple, and bombastic as possible so idiots in the orient will like it.” Harvey Weinstein, as big of a scumbag as he is, deliberately made movies that didn’t have global appeal, which is why he made great movies.

why even say it if it simply meant doing well everywhere? Were the first three film (or for that matter, the shittier Hobbit movies) not global successes?

This quite literally describes what's happening to Hollywood.

The Lord of the Rings were really only a success in the West. Doing everywhere means it doesn’t have any real values. A movie that is very appealing to the average person in Saudi Arabia shouldn’t be appealing to the average American. When they say “global appeal” this is the movie they’re thinking of:

WRONG.

Just admit that you dont understand the way the industry acts and speaks.

I love the confidence with which people can spew their ignorance.

Here’s my expertise: I worked in Chinese entertainment. Yes, “global” is *wink*wink* to China. It’s like saying “Well Urban means we’re trying to appeal to people in San Francisco.” No it means that you’re trying to appeal to people in Oakland.

Of course it's China, there's no market outside of the US that can even compare. Everything in Hollywood is targeted to China.

Check out the overlap of people melting down over preliminary news on a TV show and if they post on PT. They truly want to be miserable all the time, I believe.

I’ll assume you are one of the clueless who downloaded my post. Probably because you don’t know a damn thing about Tolkien . The hobbit and Lord of the rings were specifically about creating a lore based on English history. It wasn’t a direct A to B comparison, of characters or themes meaning exactly one and only thing, but it was supposed to be a summation of themes which made England unique , before it was overrun by outsiders

The story is the story. There is more depth and history from the imagination of Tolkien to make this series and still be true to form. It doesn’t need to “appeal to the global audience“. And they shouldn’t have spent $1 billion if they didn’t want to offend others of a frail or snowflake mentality . Get over it.

The thread and article are shitty. If the show sucks it won’t be because of China. It will be because it just sucks. You guys are fricking delusional
