Unless you’ve been held captive by a Wampa, crash-landed a TIE Fighter on Jakku or were eaten by the Sarlacc – unless you're Boba Fett, in which case you came back like a champ – it’s probably not news that Star Wars Day is upon us once again.

Because it's May the 4th, nerds and civilians alike will again be hitting Disney+ and busting out their tapes, DVDs and Blu-rays to rewatch all 11 "Star Wars" films (the nine-chapter Skywalker Saga, plus a couple of spinoffs) in this galactic franchise. (Pro tip: If you're a total newbie, watch the original 1977 "Star Wars" first.)

But which is the best of the best? These are the rankings you’re looking for.

5. 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' (2017)

For those who love spectacular space battles, the cute audacity of porgs and bad guys with British accents snarling, “Rebel scum,” there’s a lot to love in writer/director Rian Johnson’s "Episode VIII." Fans have plenty to unpack in a lengthy runtime and "Last Jedi," like other franchise vehicles, demands repeat viewings, but Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is the coolest he’s been since "The Empire Strikes Back." Plus, the next-generation heroes of the Resistance take a great leap in being a real rebellion like we saw in the original trilogy. Johnson is also winningly subversive, having Luke call out his own past and challenging the foundation that Lucas put in place 40 years ago – one character even says, “Good guys, bad guys. Made-up words.” The galaxy is no longer a hotbed of chosen ones, a place where a nobody, a lowly First Order janitor or a Resistance mechanic, can save the universe – a switch from the days of Anakin and Luke. "Last Jedi" is unsurprisingly dedicated to “our princess” Fisher, and her integral role speaks volumes to the legacy of the core characters played by her, Hamill and Harrison Ford, yet also points out the need for fresh icons to take the franchise to new heights.

4. 'Star Wars: Return of the Jedi' (1983)

3. 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' (2015)

2. 'Star Wars' (1977)

1. 'Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back' (1980)

Simply the best. It might rank highly just due to AT-ATs, the Imperial Walkers that are arguably the coolest things that have ever stomped across a movie screen. Yet there is so much greatness to "Empire" on a surface level but also digging deeper. Vader’s reveal to Luke about being the kid’s father is an all-time truth bomb, and is made better when compared to Luke’s visions of the man behind the mask when training with Yoda. Luke training with Yoda and each kinda getting ticked off at the other is priceless. But really "Empire" is like a Star Destroyer full of these scenes: Han saving Luke in the deadly cold of Hoth by warming him up in Tauntaun guts; Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) betraying his old friend Han in order to save his city; Han and Leia’s "I love you/I know” exchange before the smuggler gets frozen in carbonite. And on and on. Once could argue that it’s one of the best sequels of all time but for this series at least, it’s the chapter that takes a cool sci-fi fairy tale with Arthurian overtones and sent it on its way to being a masterwork of storytelling.

The rest

What's so weird about TLJ is that it's biggest defenders are also somehow extremely left wing. The movie has become a right v. left battle and I don't understand that at all.

FWIW the movie is far and away the worst in the franchise.

I’m surprised that fart sniffer didn’t put TLJ at Number 1. If you’re going to be a shill, you might as well go all the way.

My rankings:
11. The Last Jedi
10. Attack of the Clones
9. Rise of Skywalksr
8. Phantom Menace
7. Solo
6. The Force Awakens
5. Revenge of the Sith
4. Rogue One
3. Return of the Jedi
2. A New Hope
1. Empire Strikes Back

Drop Solo to 10 and flip rise and attack and you have the correct order.

AOTC is the worst SW film, IMO. It would make my list of worst films I've ever seen. I don't care for TLJ, but it's Citizen Kane when compared to the shite that is AOTC.

My opinion of Solo is that it’s safe, predictable, but competent. The action is fun and looks good on screen, the acting is mostly decent to good, it’s well paced, its story is logical, believable, and easy to follow. The twist at the end was forshadowed without being completely telegraphed. It’s a well made movie that functions as a standalone feature.

The movies ranked worse than it on this list do not meet that criteria. Last Jedi, Rise of Skywalker, Phantom Menace, and Attack of the Clones are not competent movies. They all suffer from more than one of the following: exceptionally poor dialogue, atrocious acting, dated special effects, poor pacing, nonsensical story, lack of consistency with the greater star wars universe, abrupt and poorly substantiated heel/face turns, poorly shoe-horned comedic relief, entire story arcs that amount to absolutely nothing, etc.

I would even consider bumping Solo up to 5 on your list.

I’m going to rewatch Solo tonight and consider it, but I actually love ROTS. It’s cheesy “so bad it’s good” fun. It’s the Con-Air of the Star Wars franchise. It shouldn’t work, but it does.

The Force Awakens is also similarly safe but competent. The difference is that while it had the recycled death star plot (with the twist that the bad guys succeeded in blowing up the government), it also had far better character development. Ray, Finn, and Ben all go through some serious developments in this movie. It really set the sequel trilogy up on a solid foundation which TLJ destroyed.

This is pretty close to mine. I'd put rogue one ahead of return of the jedi though.

I'd swap 7 and 8 too.

Attack is infinitely better than TLJ. It’s pretty much the worst movie ever made with a budget over $200 million.

What saves Attack for me is actually the first hour or so of the movie. I really like the Senator assassination plot with Anakin playing bodyguard and Obi Wan playing film noir detective. Although the Jango fight is cool, that movie doesn’t start to go off the rails until Obi-Wan arrives at Kamino and Annakin and Padme arrive on Naboo. The Last Jedi is trash from the opening scene. TLJ is really a collection of striking visuals. The movie looks really great, but the plot and justification for those visuals is insulting garbage.

Rise of Skywalker is at least okay throughout the first 2/3 of the movie. It’s paced insanely with lots of dumb fake outs and fetch quests, but it manages to hold things together until they get to that planet with the crashed chunk of death star, lando’s daughter, and the water.

IMO, there's nothing in TLJ as bad as the Anakin/padme love story. The acting and dialogue is comically bad. I can’t believe someone would write and actually film some of those lines.

The Rose/Finn "love" story is pretty terrible. Maybe you've made the right choice to forget about it.
