Assuming that it hasn’t happened yet, I’ve wondered what the plan would be if we were visited by aliens, similar to if it happened like in the movie Signs?

What does the field manual say to do? Put in a help desk ticket?

If a large asteroid is heading for direct impact with earth, we are all dead. Any plan governments have would be to control panic until it’s all over.

There’s also no way to stop a Texas size asteroid like in Armageddon. You would need a bomb 100,000 more powerful than the Tsar Bomba to affect an object that size.

How far out can we detect something like that coming our way?

The Dems will pass a law banning asteroids.

The Republicans will build a giant space wall.

Greatest quote/scene from Armageddon:

quote:

Harry Stamper: What's your contingency plan?
Truman: Contingency plan?
Harry: Your backup plan. You gotta have some kind of backup plan, right?
Truman: No, we don't have a back up plan, this is, uh…
Harry: And this is the best that you-that the government, the U.S. government could come up with? I mean, you're NASA for crying out loud, you put a man on the moon, you're geniuses! You're the guys that're thinking shite up! I'm sure you got a team of men sitting around somewhere right now just thinking shite up and somebody backing them up! You're telling me you don't have a backup plan, that these eight boy scouts right here [gestures to USAF pilots], that is the world's hope, that's what you're telling me?
Truman: Yeah.

Those asteroids could contain rare metals that could be worth many times the total global economy.

If the US government could capture one of those, they could melt it and send the money to other countries and give everyone here 6 bucks.

Yes, they'll use lasers to alter the path of objects to avoid catastrophe. They can slightly alter it enough to have it just pass by earth.

That's one way. There are others too... one way is to essentially splash paint on it so one side heats more or less. They could also have a satellite sit really close to it and the minuscule gravity would tug the asteroid off course.

We could detect it a very long way out.

That doesn't mean we will and even if we did it would take a while to determine if it would hit earth and we wouldn't really determine that it would hit earth so much as theorize that it MIGHT hit earth and if we determined it might hit earth we would probably squabble about what to do about it for so much time that it would be too late before we came up with a plan and if we came up with a plan it would have a low probability of success before human error or external factors were even calculated.

Long story short? It isn't worth NASA's or your time to worry about that shite. You have 10,000 times better chance to die being hit by a car while not paying attention (probably busy worrying about shite like this) to where your feet are at the moment than this.
