Tequila Old Fashioned

As I have expanded my love for tequila over the last few years I have come to love making an old fashioned with a good tequila as a nice change of pace. Use a good anejo, or even a reposado, that has a smokier profile to it. Really makes for a nice cocktail.
Anyone else tried this before? Give it a try if not.

I love good tequilas, so I am down to do this. I would definitely use anejo, since it is aged like bourbon. If you can find an extra anejo, then you'd be in for a real treat. They are fantastic

No thanks. As my wife will attest, I will drink almost anything. But, other than in a margarita, I do not touch te-killya.
Maybe it's because I've never had any good stuff.

I have, they are great. I usually make simple syrup out of sugar in the raw, it is really good with the tequila.

From a cocktail book I really like:
1.5 Oz tequila reposado
0.5 Oz mezcal
0.5 agave syrup (2 parts agave syrup from the store mixed with 1 part warm water)
2 dashes chocolate bitters
Fresh orange peel
Place a large ice rock into a double old fashioned glass and set aside. Combine all ingredients (except orange peel) with ice in a mixing glass. Stir until chilled and diluted, then strain into prepared glass. Garnish with a trimmed orange peel.

Had an Oaxacan old-fashioned the other day in Arizona...it was pretty damn good.

Good move. The smokiness of the mezcal is a nice touch.
Don't stir it though. The entire point of an OF is to have a great tasting cocktail that lets the spirit shine. Why water it down with stirring? The large ice cube is designed to make it cold without watering it down, so this is completely counterintuitive

Cure does a great one
Been wanting to try this place. I love Revel on Carrollton, but I had mixed feelings with 3 Muses. Cure is on my list to try soon.

I disagree. Stirring gives you just a little bit of chill and dilution to make the cocktail great. You only need to stir like 20 or so times (roughly 10 seconds) - not a full minute like you would for a martini for example. Stirring creates way less dilution than using a shaker.

If you are in to smoky, you should take a short walk past the tequila aisle and grab some mezcal. There are some really good ones that have a nice smoky flavor. I'm currently in the middle of a bottle of Banhez.

I think the difference between good, higher priced tequila and the cheap and/or budget stuff may be the most stark of all liquors. I like a good (relatively) high end glass of bourbon. But I'm happy to drink Buffalo Trace or Makers as well. But cheap tequila is flat out awful. I mean immediately want to throw up awful. However, the higher priced stuff is great.
I used to be like you and avoid tequila like the plague until I had some of the more expensive bottles. Now it is my go to spring/summer drink.

Just stop already. Tequila?

I love old fashions and decided to make a Mezcal old fashioned one day. The mezcal adds a nice smoky flavor to it. I substituted simple syrup for Agave Nectar as well. The agave nectar pairs really well with the mezcal. super delicious.

I'm a long standing tequila lover and I have a theory that people who don't like tequila have never had good tequila. It's fricking delicious.
I've actually been pretty drunk before and made an old fashioned using tequila, completely unintentional. It wasn't good. But what is good is a solid tequila reposado or anejo, with a little bit of agave and some salt dissolved in. Doesn't even need ice.
First rule of selecting tequilas: 100% agave.

A Bloody Maria is pretty good. Better than a Bloody Mary IMO.

Very good recipe. I would only add that you should use mole bitters to really set it off, oh and flame the orange peel too
