I like both but they are so different even though they both wrote books about the same regions and time periods.
Both can be bleak as hell. McMurtry definitely had more humor and is an easier read.
I feel like you need a guide and a Spanish translator to follow McCarthy at times.

If you’ve never read Lonesome Dove, you should. Best book I’ve ever read.

Indeed. Oddly, I just watched the mini series earlier this week. As great as it is, it isn't 35% as good as the book. Many of his other works are incredible as well.
I saw some guy parading around all the Podcasts last year with some world shaking new book on the Comanches. Hell, most of it (including the damn title) was clearly ripped right out of McMurtry's books.
RIP.

I think McMurtry got what it felt to be human better
and much funnier

Lonesome Dove may not be the best novel I've ever read, but right now I can't think of anything better. The dialogue alone puts it on top of the list of the Greatest American Novels. If that book had been set in New York City, there would be no question. Thank God it wasn't.

A woman's love is like the morning dew. It's just as likely to settle on a horse turd as a rose.

One of my all time favorite quotes.
RIP. So many great books

Terrible.
McMurtry wrote Terms of Endearment. The screen version included a scene that I will never forget--Shirley McClain at the nurses' station screaming "Give my daughter the shot!"
You probably need to see the whole movie to really get it, but if interested, see

You ain't kidding about the dialogue. When I think about the book I remember it like I was talking to the folks myself.

I second this comment. The book may as well have been the screenplay. When I read it I could literally hear the voices of Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones in my head as I read the dialog.

I bet you cried your eyes out and squealed like a pig when the writer of Deliverance died.

Cybill Shepherd in The Last Picture Show may be his finest contribution to life as we know it:

I may be mistaken, but I believe he wrote Lonesome Dove as a screenplay first. He shopped it around to the studios and there was no interest. So he wrote the novel, and the rest is history.
At least that's what I remember reading 40 years ago!

He wrote it originally to star John Wayne as Call, Jimmy Stewart as Gus.
Stewart might have worked but Jones is a much better fit than Wayne and Duvall was perfect as Gus.
I think the best character not developed in the series can book was Wilbarger. He had some great lines.
