What's the main money maker for Derm? Selling product? I think that was the surprise on the list for me.

Several of my doc friends work ER shifts for extra cash. They do 2-3 shifts a week and make about $4-6k a night. They are not “ER” docs but just work the ER.

A lot has changed in regard to working in the ER in the last 30 years. Used to it was common to see family medicine guys, internal medicine guys, and even people with no residency (just 1 year internship) working in the ER. Now a days bigger ERs want people to who did a EM residency. Those other people are kinda pushed to smaller places.

A lot of "stand alone" EDs only require the physician on duty be a MD/DO. I know a cardiologist that picks up shifts at one of these places. Crap shoot for the patient because a physician is only as good as his training/exposure.

Dr. Zev Rosenwaks of Cornell who’s in reproductive medicine makes over $7M/year. Dr. Kevin Bozic (orthopedic surgeon) at UT Austin makes near a $1M/year.

I’m the most qualified person on this board to answer this as I used to be the vp of provider compensation for a large health system. The answer is no. They do make more than primary care and urgent care. I’d say they are average when you look at all specialties. They are also not as high demand as they once were as most health systems only want er utilization for true emergencies and are investing heavily in er avoidance strategies by focusing on prevention by hiring more primary care and lower cost options such as urgent care. They also are hiring more pAs and Nps instead of MDs. Companies like the Schumacher group who specializes in running ERs and ER billing are the ones who can pay ER mds the best.

They have assigned shifts to be "on-call". Part of the job & SOME of them probably make bank doing that.

Most ER doctors I know are pretty fresh out of medical school so I’ve always assumed it’s a ‘starting’ position and don’t make as much.

How many ER doctors do you know?

Drunks and drug seekers call me an a-hole and I reply that's Dr a-hole to you
Hope you're sharper than a couple ER docs I've worked with.

had one work up 2 people at 3am for an atv crash. "Thorough" prelim exam and standard stat orders for damn near head to toe ct, blood work, et al ... except he failed to notice competitor hospital across town ID bracelets on both patients.

"uh Doc? You checked with ____'s ER to see what they diagnosed these 2 with, or you didn't see they went there earlier tonight?"

He diagnosed their confused mental state as wreck related instead of stoned out of their gourds. Patients volunteered they crashed about noon and we were the 3rd ER visited. Even complained about how long the 2nd took before releasing so they could come visit us.

At 3am they were the only pts in the ER that night btw (Sunday before a holiday Monday).

Close friend just became er doc...
Made over 350k first year out of residency.

they usually are like contractors and paid by hour...he is a few years out of residency and has found a common ground of work and life fun and makes 450-550k a year..travels a lot for fun because they have schedules like pilots...(couple days on couple off)

List posted is way off base. Medical subspecialists in this area do WAY better than the chart suggests. Cardiology, critical care, oncology, nephrology...

And, in Derm's case, elective procedures not covered by insurance.

Guess you missed this

Training at the Big Free is why I'm the ER Gawd I am today

And trying to get someone to do a speciality based on money or lifestyle they most probably will be unhappy.

One thing many of you are forgetting is the fat check that’s written each month by all docs paying off med school loans,,,,lots of friends cutting some 10k checks each month.

My wife (no pics) is an ER doc. I’ve had to learn how to navigate her bad shifts. Sometimes she just comes home and doesn’t want to talk at all. Most of the time it’s good though. No fricking way I could handle some of the things she sees. Abused and mistreated children are the worst for her. It’s weird to me someone coming in with limbs dismembered from a car wreck don’t affect her much. I would def have to have a counselor or therapist I saw on the reg.
